A turbine suitable for a gas turbine engine is provided with a stage of rotary aerofoil blades which is surrounded by a shroud ring made of silicon nitride. In order to minimize load transfer between the shroud ring and the turbine casing the shroud ring is radially supported by and radially spaced apart from the turbine casing by a woven wire mesh array.

A method of manufacturing cooled aerofoil blades in which blade parts are bonded together to provide complete blades. The blade parts are provided with mating surfaces which are simultaneously spark erosion machined to match the same prior to the blade parts being brazed together. Spark erosion machining is performed by maintaining the mating surfaces to be matched at a constant distance apart from each other and translating a tensioned wire electrode along a path passing mid-way between the mating surfaces.

Manufacture of cooled aerofoil blades

A turbopropeller, or turbofan, gas turbine engine comprising a single spool core engine arranged to drive a propeller, or a fan, via gear means may be provided with a starter motor, and a clutch means. The clutch means disengages the propeller, or fan, from the gear means and core engine when the core engine is at rest or running below a predetermined speed to allow easy starting of the core engine by the starter motor. The clutch means engages the propeller, or fan, with the gear means and core engine when the core engine is running at or above the predetermined speed. An axially moveable piston may be provided to brake the propeller when the clutch means has disengaged the propeller from the core engine.

Turbopropeller or turbofan gas turbine engine

A lubrication system comprises a chamber adapted to contain a lubricant and a duct to convey lubricant from the chamber to the apparatus to be lubricated. A pipe is adapted to introduce air into the lubricant flowing through the duct so that for a given flow rate through the duct the rate at which lubricant is withdrawn from the chamber is reduced when compared with the rate when no air is introduced into the lubricant flow.

Lubrication system

An oil tank suitable for an aircraft mounted gas turbine engine is divided into three series connected chambers. Aerated oil after engine use is fed into the first chamber and de-aerated oil withdrawn from the third chamber for engine use. The chambers are interconnected in such a manner that when the tank is inverted, a reservoir of oil is retained within the third chamber to provide a continued supply of oil to the oil outlet for a finite time period and insufficient oil flows into the first chamber from the second to obstruct an air vent provided in the first chamber.
