An air flow state determining system that determines a mass air flow into a cylinder of an engine having a cam phaser includes a first module that determines whether an air flow state is one of steady-state and transient based on a cam phaser position. A second module determines the mass air flow using one of a mass air flow sensor signal and a speed density relationship based on whether the mass air flow state is one of steady-state and transient.

Method for detecting steady-state and transient air flow conditions for cam-phased engines

An inlet air dynamics (IAD) characterization control system for an internal combustion engine includes a first module that estimates a future firing event manifold absolute pressure (MAP) and a second module that determines a MAP cycle difference based on the future firing event MAP and a previous cycle MAP. A third module characterizes an IAD state based on the MAP cycle difference.

Model-based inlet air dynamics state characterization

A fuel control system delivers fuel to an engine cylinder and compensates for lost fuel. The fuel control system comprises a fuel dynamics module that determines a fuel dynamics model that is indicative of fuel behavior. The fuel dynamic module determines an inverse of the fuel dynamics model, receives a fuel command, and generates an adjusted fuel command based on the fuel command and the inverse of the fuel dynamics model. A lost fuel compensation module receives the adjusted fuel command and generates a final fuel command based on the adjusted fuel command and a lost fuel factor. A control module controls fuel delivery according to the final fuel command.

Nonlinear fuel dynamics control with lost fuel compensation

An engine control system that identifies fuel dynamical steady state (FDSS) includes a cylinder and a controller that determines a detection period. The controller monitors a mass of fuel ingested by the cylinder during the detection period. The controller identifies FDSS if the mass of fuel remains within a predetermined range during the detection period.

Detection of fuel dynamical steady state

Engine cylinder inlet air rate measurement is provided with minimization of system calibration and parameter measurement using a correction generated under steady state engine inlet air dynamic conditions through a comparison of mass airflow-based engine inlet air rate measurement and a nominal calculated cylinder inlet air rate. The correction may be periodically updated under steady state engine inlet air dynamic conditions and may be applied under all engine inlet air dynamic conditions, especially transient inlet air dynamic conditions.

The state of internal combustion engine inlet air dynamics is characterized in a substantially noise immune albeit rapid manner according to the degree by which a first set of criteria indicate a steady state condition in which engine inlet air rate substantially corresponds to cylinder inlet air rate or to the degree by which a second set of criteria indicate a transient condition in which engine inlet air rate does not substantially correspond to cylinder air rate. Cylinder inlet air rate may then be predicted in accord with the characterization.

Air dynamics state characterization

A method for estimating and correcting bias errors in a vehicle system which implements iterative prediction and estimation to determine a measure of at least one determinable vehicle engine parameter determines if the vehicle engine is in a substantially steady state condition, determines a measure of error between the predicted and measured values of a control parameter while the vehicle is in the steady state condition, estimates a system bias in response to the determined error, and offsets the system bias in subsequent predictions, thereby reducing the error between the predicted and measured values of the control parameter and increasing the accuracy of the estimations of the determinable vehicle parameter.
