An ophthalmic lens including a substrate-independent adhesive primer for joining a functional element to a lens substrate. In particular, the ophthalmic lens includes at least one polymerized lens substrate including at least one thermoset monomer, a functional component including at least one thermoplastic layer, a surface of the at least one thermoplastic layer facing the polymerized lens substrate, and a primer coating deposited onto the surface of the at least one thermoplastic film facing the polymerized lens substrate.

Embodiments of the disclosure relate to primer compositions for increasing the adhesion between a polarizing film laminate to a cast-polymerized lens. The chemisorptive primers may react with cast-polymerized lens monomers and/or interact with the polarizing film laminate to provide exceptionally strong adhesion between the film laminate and the ophthalmic lens.

The lens blank can be surfaced on one or both sides to form a finished or semi-finished lens. Other embodiments are also described.

A polyurethane based adhesive containing one polyol compound derived from caprolactone monomer having a number average molecular weight between 200 and 1000 combined with a polyisocyanate compound. The functionality of the polycaprolactone polyol is between 1 and 4. Other aspects include a polarizing layered structure, a polarized lens and a method for manufacturing same all of which include the polyurethane based adhesive. The adhesive avoids delamination and is useful in optical applications where it will be in contact with water, for example during surfacing or edging process.

An optical adhesive product and a process for manufacturing an optical adhesive product, laminated film ensembles, and laminated lenses. The optical adhesive product includes a glyoxal water solution that is pH adjusted for use as an optical adhesive that demonstrates a wet peel force strength above about 6 Newtons. A water based polymer, such as PVOH, may be added to the adhesive system. According to the process, the glyoxal adhesive system is manufactured and utilized to laminate TAC-PVA-TAC films together to form a polar film ensemble. The polar film ensemble is laminated to an optical substrate and in the case of an ophthalmic lens, surfaced, coated and edged. The optical adhesive product avoids film separation in the polar TAC-PAV-TAC film ensemble during edging.

An optical adhesive product and a process for manufacturing an optical adhesive product, including laminated film ensembles, and laminated lenses, are described. The optical adhesive product includes a glyoxal water solution that is pH adjusted for use as an optical adhesive that demonstrates a wet peel force strength above about 6 Newtons. A water-based polymer, such as PVOH, may be added to the adhesive system. According to the process, the adhesive system is manufactured and utilized to laminate TAC-PVA-TAC films together to form a polar film ensemble. The polar film ensemble is laminated to an optical substrate and, when forming an ophthalmic lens, surfaced, coated and edged. The optical adhesive product avoids film separation in the polar TAC-PAV-TAC film ensemble during edging.

Glyoxal adhesive system and process for manufacturing same

A method and coating used to prepare a photochromically-enabled bifocal ophthalmic lens. The coating is a high adhesive strength acrylate-based coating that contains a small quantity of a polycarbonate-based TPU. The coating is applied to produce an intermediate imbibable bifocal surface. A photochromic solution is subsequently imbibed by contact with the bifocal surface.

An acrylate-based optical coating composition containing a blend of monomers, a metal salt, a Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer (HALS), an antioxidant (AO), an initiator and a photochromic dye. The initiator has a range of free radical energy that is below a predetermined level. The cure process is controlled by the catalyst and initiator in combination with the HALS and AO to avoid deleterious reactions that can increase yellowness. The composition is well suited to be applied to a lens and cured in the mold to form a coating with reduced yellowness having high adhesion and abrasion-resistant properties. A photochromic segmented bifocal lens is produced with low photochromic fatigue and favorable % T values.

A photochromic coating exhibiting improved performance and photochromic lenses made using the coating. The coating has excellent photochromic darkening and fatigue properties. The coating formulation is made from a monomer blend having at least two different types of monomers. A metal salt catalyst is used along with an initiator. An antioxidant is used in combination with a hindered amine light stabilizer. The coating is suitable for use in an in-mold coating process.

The invention relates to a acrylated-based optical coating composition containing an organic peroxide initiator which presents a low yellowness level. The initiator has a range of free radical energy that is below a predetermined level. The cure process is controlled by the use a catalyst and a low energy initiator to avoid deleterious reactions that can increase yellowness. The composition is well suited to be applied to a lens and cured in the mold to form a coating with reduced yellowness having high adhesion and abrasion-resistant properties. A dye can be introduced into the composition to form a tinted lens.

Initiators for optical coating formulations with reduced yellowness

A system and method for providing photochromic segmented multifocal optical lenses. A latex primer formulation is provided for effectuating adhesion of a surface casting composition onto a lens having a photochromic coating. The method provides efficient, cost effective production of durable photochromic segmented lenses, via secure adhesion of a surface casting layer onto a photochromic substrate while maintaining desirable optical characteristics. A composite optical lens is advantageously formed having a photochromic base lens, a primer composition bonded to a convex surface of said base lens, and a cured casting composition bonded to said primer composition layer. The cured casting formulation includes a segment region to impart multifocal qualities onto the resultant composite optical lens.
