A delivery interrupt mechanism for a printing machine includes a support frame having a stationary guide defining a guide path. A flexible finger is slidably supported by the guide for movement along a curved portion of the guide path while substantially conforming in shape to the curved portion between a retracted position and an extended position in which the finger extends from the frame to support leading edges of printed sheets in a printing machine. The finger is connected to a rotatable input shaft mounted on the frame so that the finger is moved along the curved portion of the guide path between its retracted and extended positions when the input shaft is rotated.

In accordance with the invention, a magnetic cylinder and image plate or blanket carrier plate of magnetic material are provided for printing. The cylinder has a peripheral surface and the image plate or carrier plate is wrapped around the cylinder with an inner surface of the plate being in direct contact with the cylinder peripheral surface. The blanket and carrier plate are subject to circumferential movement around the cylinder as the blanket is subject to localized pressure from another cylinder in a nip, plus forces due to ink tack. The cylinder peripheral surface is defined by circumferentially spaced, axially extending ridges for suppressing local sliding by surface gripping with the plate inner surface.

In order to improve the operation of an ink fountain, particularly for web offset printing presses, an ink fountain assembly is disclosed which includes a fountain roller and a fountain blade assembly which is positioned in operatively associated relation to the fountain roller. The fountain blade assembly has a fountain base with a key supporting surface and aim has a plurality of ink keys on the key supporting surface of the fountain base to extend substantially along the length of the fountain roller in variably spaced confronting parallel relation to the fountain roller. With these features of construction, the ink fountain assembly includes an alignment system for maintaining each of the ink keys in parallel relation to the fountain roller and a drive system for controlled movement of each of the ink keys toward and away from the fountain roller.

In order to achieve relative simplicity in a reliable measurement technique, an apparatus and method for measuring wet film thickness on a surface is disclosed. The apparatus includes a fixture adapted to be positioned in close proximity to the surface, a gauge supported by the fixture for movement toward and away from the surface, and a spacer for spacing the fixture at a selected distance from the surface. The gauge is moveable from a first position out of contact with the wet film to a second position in contact with the surface to create a measurable spot of the wet film on the gauge. The method includes providing a gauge supported for movement toward and away from the surface, moving the gauge into contact with the surface to create a measurable wet film spot, and moving the gauge out of contact with the wet film to measure the spot. When this has been achieved, the method includes the further step of taking a measurement of the wet film spot and converting the measurement to a wet film thickness, preferably by utilizing a calibration graph that has been created by utilizing a test plate having a tapered channel of known depth.

A magnetic printing cylinder has retractable plate register pins. The printing plate is positioned on the cylinder by engagement of an edge of the plate with the pins in extended position. The pins are moved to retracted position and the plate wrapped around the cylinder. The pin moves radially of the cylinder in a bushing. O-rings on the pin limit outward movement of the pin and resist pin rotation. In assembly of the cylinder, the pin and bushing extend above the cylinder surface and are ground to the final cylinder dimension.

A portable table assembly for facilitating initial alignment in mounting of a metallic printing plate to a magnetic plate cylinder includes a table having a top surface for supporting the metallic printing plate. A roller is mounted in the table and is exposed on the top surface for guiding the metallic printing plate along the top surface. The roller has an axis perpendicular to a line defined by a direction the metallic printing plate moves when mounting the metallic printing plate from the top surface onto the magnetic plate cylinder. An arcuate bracket is mounted to a bottom side of the table and supports the top surface at a tangent to the plate cylinder with an upper edge of the table resting on the plate cylinder. The bracket engages a locating cylinder having an axis substantially parallel to the magnetic plate cylinder and lying adjacent to the magnetic plate cylinder.

A cylinder of a rotary offset printing machine is provided with a gapless lock-up means for an offset plate or metal backed offset blanket by setting into the cylinder a fixed jaw and a movable jaw that have facing undercut surfaces defining a recess within which the end tabs of an offset plate or metal backed blanket are received. As the jaws are closed the end tabs are clamped firmly between the jaws. A slight tendency of the end tabs to bulge at the outer margins of the jaws is overcome by an anti-creep means which is distorted between the end tabs as the jaws close so as to produce an inward force component on the end tabs.

An apparatus for tenderizing meat having a plurality of knives each comprising an elongated blade including structure for reciprocating the knives to project and withdraw the cutting edge ends of the knives into and from the meat in order to sever fibers therein. The apparatus also has a blade stabilizer through which the blades extend engaging the blades intermediate their ends for supporting the blades against lateral bending which would tend to damage the blades. The apparatus also includes structure for retracting the stabilizer member relative to the blades during the final completion of the penetrating so as not to restrict the penetrating.
