The invention relates to a process for preparing bromine-containing polymer, comprising a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of tetrabromoxylylene dihalide, or tetrabromoxylylene dihalide in combination with pentabromobenzyl halide, with a reactant having one or more six-membered aromatic rings, wherein the reaction takes place in a solvent in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and isolating from the reaction mixture the bromine-containing polymer. The so-formed polymers and their use as flame retardants form additional aspects of the invention.

The invention provides a process for preparing bromine-containing polymers, comprising a Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction of pentabromobenzyl halide with a polymer reactant which contains one or more six-membered aromatic ring(s) in its repeat unit, in the presence of at least one Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The so-formed bromine-containing polymers, having pendent &#x2014;CHCBrgroups attached to at least a portion of the six-membered aromatic rings of the polymer, with a carbon ring atom of said six-membered aromatic ring being bonded to the aliphatic carbon of said &#x2014;CHCBrpendent group, are also provided. These bromine-containing polymers are useful as flame retarding agents.

A liquid flame retardant composition which comprises one or more flame retarding agents, which are the epoxides obtainable by reacting tetrabromobisphenol A with epichlorohydrin and their end-capped derivatives represented by Formula (1) is provided. Flame retardants, processes for their preparation and uses thereof in polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams

A process for producing KNO3 from polyhalite to is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the process comprises steps of (a) contacting polyhalite with HNO3; (b) adding Ca(OH)2 to the solution, thereby precipitating as CaSO4 at least part of the sulfate present in said solution; (c) precipitating as Mg(OH)2 at least part of the Mg2+ remaining in said solution by further addition of Ca(OH)2 to the remaining solution; (d) concentrating the solution, thereby precipitating as a sulfate compound at least part of the sulfate remaining in solution; (e) separating at least part of the NaCl from the solution remaining; and (f) crystallizing as solid KNO3 at least part of the K+ and NO3-contained in the solution. The process enables direct conversion of polyhalite to KNO3 of purity exceeding 98.5% and that is essentially free of magnesium and sulfate impurities.

A liquid flame retardant composition having one or more flame retarding agents, which are the epoxides obtainable by reacting tetrabromobisphenol A with epichlorohydrin and their end-capped derivatives represented by Formula (1), is provided. A cement mix for preparation of a magnesium silico-phosphate cement (MSPC) with an altered hardening rate is provided. The cement mix comprises on the order of 1% of an [MF]salt or acid. Upon addition of water, the mix produces a final set cement that has similar physical properties to those of a cement prepared from a mix lacking the additive, but with a significantly altered setting time. In some embodiments of the invention, the additive is provided in the form of a coating for the MgO component of the mix. In preferred embodiments, HTiF, NaTiFand/or KTiFare used as retarders, while KAlFis used as an accelerant. Cement mixes containing additives for altering the hardening rate of chemically bonded silico-phosphate cements and methods therefor

A continuous process of preparing bromopicrin is disclosed. The process is effected by transferring a continuous flow of a first mixture and a continuous flow of a second mixture into a first reactor, the first mixture containing nitromethane and bromine and the second mixture containing an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance, to thereby obtain a reaction mixture which comprises bromopicrin in said first reactor; and collecting the bromopicrin from the reaction mixture. Highly pure bromopicrin obtained by this process is also disclosed.

A method for the production of KNOfrom polyhalite is provided. The method comprises steps of decomposing said polyhalite into syngenite, gypsum, and soluble components, treating the solid decomposition products sequentially with HNOand Ca basic compound, precipitating the CaSOthus formed, and crystallizing the KNOfrom the solution remaining. The method recovers up to 75% of the potassium present in the raw polyhalite as KNOand substantially all of the remainder as a potassium magnesium sulfate salt.

Process for production of commercial quality potassium nitrate from polyhalite

A method is provided for advantageously altering the rate of hardening of a magnesium silico-phosphate cement (MSPC). Addition of on the order of 1% of an [MF]salt or acid to an MSPC, obtained by adding the salt or acid either directly to the dry mix or to the water used to effect hydraulic hardening of the cement, significantly alters the hardening rate without adversely affecting the physical properties of the final set cement. In preferred embodiments, NaTiFand/or KTiFare used as retardants, while KAlFis used as an accelerant. Additives for altering the hardening rate of chemically bonded silico-phosphate cements and method therefor

Process of preparing high purity bromopicrin, and high purity bromopicrin produced therefrom. Providing a mixture of nitromethane and bromine, and preferably water, and absent of organic solvent. Adding an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance to the mixture, thereby providing a reaction mixture containing bromopicrin, the adding performed such that no excess of the alkaline substance occurs in the reaction mixture during the adding. Collecting the organic phase (containing the bromopicrin) from the reaction mixture. No need for subjecting the organic phase of the reaction mixture to distillation or extraction, for obtaining near quantitative yield of bromopicrin having purity of at least equal to or greater than 96 weight percent. Process parameters controlling selectivity of reaction forming bromopicrin are molar ratio of bromine and nitromethane in the mixture; reaction temperature while bromopicrin is formed; concentration of the alkaline substance in the aqueous solution; and reaction time.

Polybrominated bisaryl compounds containing bromomethyl or bromomethylene groups are provided, as well as flameproof polymeric formulations comprising the compounds. The novel compounds exhibit a good thermal stability, and are particularly suitable for flame-retarding polystyrene thermoplastic foams. A process for making the polybrominated bisaryl compounds is also provided.
