In at least some embodiments, a high-voltage drilling system includes a a power supply to output high-voltage power to an electrical conductor, a bit that extends a borehole based on the high-voltage power, and a hybrid drillstring that transports a fluid flow from the bit to convey detached formation material out of the borehole. At least part of the electrical conductor resides within the hybrid drillstring to convey power to the bit. The hybrid drillstring includes a coiled tubing section and a jointed pipe section.

High-voltage drilling methods and systems using hybrid drillstring conveyance

Some system embodiments include: a casing string having a distal end with a latch assembly; and a drillstring latched within the casing string by the latch assembly, the drillstring having at least one tool for perforation and stimulation. A pressure while drilling tool and one or more packers may be provided in the drillstring to further enable the stimulation operation. Prior to perforation, the casing string is cemented in place via a cement valve, and the drillstring is unlatched and raised to the desired completion position. The perforation and stimulation process can be repeated to provide multiple completions. The drillstring can be removed from the borehole or seated in place to control production. Logging instruments can be included for steering and/or use in making completion decisions.

Single-assembly system and method for one-trip drilling, casing, cementing and perforating

A disclosed downhole optical imaging tool includes a light source and a camera enclosed within a tool body having at least two sidewall windows. A first window transmits light from the light source to a target region in the borehole, while a second window passes reflected light from the target region to the internal camera. The target region is spaced along the borehole away from the second window in a direction opposite the first window. In some embodiments, this configuration is provided by angling the first and second windows with respect to the sidewall, or by shaping the windows to cast and receive light from a 'forward' direction. Some tool embodiments include motion and/or orientation sensors that are employed by a processor to combine separately captured images into a panoramic borehole image. It can be employed during drilling operations employing air or a substantially transparent liquid as a drilling fluid.

Downhole optical imaging tools and methods

A method and apparatus are disclosed for drilling a wellbore using a concentric dual drill string. Multiple individually selectively isolable crossover ports intervaled may be provided along the length of the drill string thereby facilitating pumping a well control fluid within a wellbore annulus without the need to run-in or trip-out the drill string. Multiple one way check valves may be included at various points within an inner pipe of the dual drill string to minimize settling of particulate matter during long periods of non-circulation. In an offshore arrangement, the drill string may be used without a marine riser. A rotating control device is provided, and a hydraulic power unit is located at the seafloor for controlling and lubricating the rotating control device. A pump may be located at the seafloor for managing wellbore annulus pressure via the rotating control device.

Wellbore drilling using dual drill string

Formation testing systems and methods may inject fluids into a formation to initiate fractures and facilitate measurements of various formation properties. In accordance with certain disclosed embodiments, the injection tools are further provided with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensors to monitor the injected fluids and provide measurements of near-borehole fracture orientations and volumes. Contrast agents and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques may be employed. The fluid injection may occur via an extendible isolation pad, via a fracturing jet, or via an injection port in an isolated region of the borehole. The systems may employ pressure monitoring in conjunction with the NMR sensors to further enhance estimates of formation and fracture properties.

A coring apparatus may be integrated with fluid analysis capabilities for in situ analysis of core samples from a subterranean formation. An instrumented coring apparatus may include an inner core barrel; an outer core barrel; a coring bit; and an instrumented core barrel having an analysis device in fluid communication with the inner core barrel.
