A method of forming a three dimensional object using a low pressure cold spray process for is disclosed. Powdered material is delivered at a temperature below the melting point of the powdered material. A nozzle of a cold spray gun is aligned at an angle &#x3b8;to the substrate. The powdered material is delivered at a supersonic speed to the substrate causing the powdered material to adhere to the substrate for forming a first layer of material. An amount of optical distortion caused by the first layer of material adhered to the substrate is determined relative to the substrate and the nozzle is reoriented to an angle &#x3b8;being offset from an axis defined by the first layer of material. A second layer of material is deposited onto the first layer of material with the nozzle being oriented at the angle &#x3b8;to the first layer of material.

Example embodiments of this invention include a method and a device for assessing the internal structure of the tooth. In one example, the method is comprised of emitting a sequence of ultrasonic pulses from a given point on the tooth surface into the tooth at various directions of incidence (angles of incidence) with respect to the local tooth surface, recording the corresponding sequence of ultrasonic echoes from different internal dental formations, and processing the collected ultrasonic pulse-echo and pulse-direction data to present internal structure of the tooth in quantitative or graphical form.

An impeller housing is interconnected with the reaction chamber for receiving powder feed from the reaction chamber for metering powder feed received from the reaction chamber. A hopper vessel receives metered powder feed from the impeller housing for providing powder to the low pressure cold spray applicator. The reaction chamber is fluidly connected to a source of a reactive gas for chemically modifying the powder feed for in situ reducing surface oxidation of the powder feed.

The nail reflects returning ultrasonic echoes back to the piezoelectric transducer. The returning ultrasonic echoes vibrate the piezoelectric transducer. A processor of a computer converts the vibrations into electrical pulses. The processor evaluates amplitude values of the electrical pulses to determine the parameters of the human nail, including the thickness, density and elasticity. The parameters are displayed on a display and analyzed by a technician to determine the nail condition. The health of the person or the effect of products on the nail can be determined based on the nail parameters.

Method to obtain 3D images of a flowing region beneath an object using speckle reflections

One embodiment includes a biometric sensor for generating a three-dimensional representation of a portion of a finger, the finger comprising a three-dimensional structure including a surface tissue layer and a subsurface tissue layer, the biometric sensor comprising: a platen; a first transducer; a drive system; a controller; and a software module. The platen is configured to receive the finger. The first transducer is arranged about the platen, configured to scan at least a portion of the finger by transmitting ultrasound waves toward the finger and receiving the ultrasound waves after the waves reflect off of the finger, and further configured to output signals based upon the received ultrasound waves. The drive system is configured to motivate the set of transducers accurately about a central axis substantially parallel to the length of the finger to be scanned. The controller is configured to control the motion of the drive system. The software module is configured to receive a form of the signals from the first transducer and to compose the form of the signals into a three-dimensional representation of at least a portion of the surface tissue layer of the finger.

The bored portion establishes a bore that extends longitudinally from one end of the electrode cap and terminates at a surface having a radius relative to the longitudinal axis. An example method of maintaining a focal point of an ultrasonic wave includes propagating an ultrasonic wave from a transducer through a bore and a tip portion of an electrode cap and receiving a reflection of the ultrasonic wave. The method further includes determining information about a welded area using the reflection and adjusting a radius of a surface of the electrode cap to position a focal point of the ultrasonic wave within the tip portion.

A portable gas dynamic cold spray gun eliminates many of the inherent limitations of the prior art by minimizing a scatter of operating parameters and improving its efficiency. According to one feature of the present invention, the powder flow rate is continuously measured so that the powder flow rate and/or the flow rate of the pressurized gas can be adjusted accordingly in order to control the deposition efficiency of the spray gun.

The apparatus includes a two-dimensional array of ultrasonic transducers arranged with a delay line for positioning adjacent a surface of a weld. A layer of gel is placed between the delay line and the weld surface. The array of transducers emit ultrasonic waves that pass into the weld. The reflected waves are received by the transducers and relayed to a central processing unit that analyzes the time delay, amplitude, and amplitude attenuation to calculate the border of the weld nugget, the thickness of the welded material, the thickness of the gel layer, and other factors contributing to weld quality.

A system and method for assessing the quality of spot weld joints between pieces of metal includes an ultrasound transducer probing a spot weld joint. The ultrasound transducer transmits ultrasonic radiation into the spot weld joint, receives corresponding echoes, and transforms the echoes into electrical signals. An image reconstructor connected to the ultrasound transducer transforms the electrical signals into numerical data representing an ultrasound image. A neural network connected to the image reconstructor analyzes the numerical data and an output system presents information representing the quality of the spot weld joint. The system is trained to assess the quality of spot weld joints by scanning a spot weld joint with an ultrasound transducer to produce the data set representing the joint; then physically deconstructing the joint to assess the joint quality.
