Composite gears and methods of manufacturing such gears

An axle final drive assembly for a work vehicle is provided. The axle final drive assembly includes a final drive housing; an output shaft extending from the final drive housing; a planetary gear set contained in the final drive housing and having an element fixed to the output shaft; and an input member contained in the final drive housing providing rotational input to the planetary gear set for driving the output shaft. The planetary gear set, at least in part, is pivotally coupled to the input member.

A power take-off (PTO) transmission unit transfers power between an input shaft and an output shaft. A gear set selectively couples the input shaft to the output shaft. A shift device includes a shift rail with ends forming inner pistons within chambers. The shift rail is configured to translate between first, second, and third positions based on the pressures of the chambers. Inner pistons nest within the outer pistons in the chambers. A shift fork and shift collar translate with the shift rail to, in the first position, engage the gear set such that power is transferred at a first speed ratio; in the second position, engage the gear set such that power is transferred at a second speed ratio; and in the third position, engage the gear set to provide a neutral mode in which the output shaft is free to rotate relative to the input shaft.

Pinion gears for planetary gear transmissions are hobbed, heat treated, and then ground to get better control of the leads/profiles on all the gear teeth. Then a light shot peening is applied to the tooth flanks to achieve the desired compressive residual stresses on the tooth surface. By applying the process in the controlled manner specified, the surface is not over-cold worked. Next, a chemically assisted isotropic surface treatment is applied over the pinion gears to improve the surface finish on the gear teeth. For low speed applications the surface finish improves the lambda ratio, allowing for a good oil film thickness on the surface of the gear teeth.
