A low gloss capstock compound is disclosed. The combination of gloss inhibiting agents, metal-based ionomer thermoplastic resins, and acid scavenger added to conventional polyethylene polymer resin achieves a gloss angle at 85&#xb0; of below 10 GU. Optionally, the compound can also include weathering agents to improve outdoor durability. The compound can be fully formulated or a masterbatch for let-down into polymer to form the fully formulated compound.

Low gloss ionomer-based capstock

Coated reinforcing biofiber for thermoplastic articles is disclosed. The coating on the biofiber comprises a plastisol. The coated reinforcing biofiber can be used in thermoplastic compounds to simulate the appearance of natural wood while adding significantly increased flexural modulus for the wood plastic composite (WPC).

Rigid biofiber thermoplastic composite and articles made therefrom

Poly(vinyl chloride) is compounded with a chalk-like, essentially pure calcium carbonate to provide improved weathering resistance of rigid poly(vinyl chloride) articles subjected to external exposures of heat and sunlight. Blends and alloys are also disclosed. Optionally, one can add either zinc alkyl ester scavenger, organotin stabilizer, or both to further improve the effectiveness of the essentially pure calcium carbonate.

Use of calcium carbonate in rigid poly(vinyl chloride) compositions

A process for the extrusion of rigid PVC profile other than pipe is disclosed in a twin conical screw extruder, equipped with high shear screws. The process includes extruding a compound specially adapted for the process, the compound contains a polyvinyl chloride resin with an average particle size of from 130 to about 200 microns, a lubricant system containing no more than about 3.5 parts of one or more lubricants, an organo metal salt, from 0 to less than 0.75 parts of a polymeric processing aid, at least one filler/pigment, and a stabilizer for PVC. The process achieves extrudate surfaces characterized by a smooth, dull finish. The process advantageously operates at high extrusion output rates under the conditions specified.

High output twin screw extrusion process

Multilayered extruded thermoplastic profiles are disclosed. The profiles are useful for decorative extruded louvers exhibiting a polished metal-look. The metal-look is achieved by the use of a limited amount of powdered aluminum metal having particle size of 50 microns or less, combined with an effective amount of nacreous pigment. The invention provides a multi-layer extrudate having the appearance of polished metal in the appearance layer in combination with an opaque or clear base layer. The preferred embodiment is a co-extruded polyvinyl chloride. Preferably, the appearance layer comprises 100 weight parts of rigid polyvinyl chloride as the thermoplastic matrix, a combination of from 0.05 to about 4 parts by weight of aluminum particles having an average particle size of from 10-40 microns, from 0.1 to 5 weight parts of titanium dioxide coated mica pigment or colored version thereof, and optional organic or inorganic coloring pigment(s). Various other compounding components are preferably included in the appearance layer which do not interfere with the appearance and provide proper processing and physical properties. A limited melt processing window is available to sufficiently work the compound without destroying the pigments components. In a preferred embodiment a multilayered polished metal-look louver profile is made in a manner to provide consistency of quality, reduced material cost and improved melt processing properties by processing under conditions which do not destroy the visual effects of the combined dispersed pigment/metal powder components. Louvers exhibiting enhanced face-to-flop color change is made by incorporating micronized titanium dioxide, aluminum powder, and nacreous pigment.

Thermoplastic multilayer louver with a polished metal look

This invention discloses an improved method for powder PVC extrusion using particulate PVC resin specified herein which enables smooth, dull surfaces for extrudates under broad processing conditions, in particular at relatively lower shear and temperature. The resins are characterized as having an average particle size ranging from 50 to 125 microns, a DOP porosity of from about 0.27 cc/gm to about 0.5 cc/gm, and a friability rating of 5 or less, preferably 2 or less depending on the stock temperature range during extrusion.

Method for extrusion of powered PVC compounds

A method for polymerizing polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride copolymers is provided in which a monomer slurry is formed by adding the monomers and water (hot or cold) in the reaction vessel, and the slurry is brought to reaction temperature. After a time delay of 0 to 15 minutes, an emulsifier package is added, and after a further time delay of 0 to 15 minutes, a catalyst emulsion is added. The emulsifier package comprises a primary emulsifier which is partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of saponification between about 60 and about 90 mole percent and a solubility in methanol index at 55.degree. C. in a range of up to about 60 percent. A secondary emulsifier is included in the emulsifier package which is a preferably cellulosic type emulsifier. Preferably an additional emulsifier is added which is a hydrolyzed polyvinyl acetate having a degree of hydrolysis of at least 68 percent. The polymerization product has good bulk density and porosity parameters. Resins produced from this product have low fisheye characteristics.

Method for providing improved colloidal stability and polyvinyl chloride

Porous particles of vinyl resin are disclosed where said particles are non-spherical in shape, highly porous, skinless and friable. Processes are also disclosed for producing these novel particles. The particles are preferably PVC and exhibit an ability to absorb large amounts of plasticizer in a short time.

An improved process is provided for producing porous PVC resin particles by a thickened aqueous suspension polymerization process comprising polymerizing vinyl chloride monomer in an aqueous suspension wherein said aqueous medium contains at least one dispersant capable of thickening water, and optionally at least one secondary surfactant, at least one oil-soluble free radical generating catalyst, the improvement comprising charging said free radical catalyst as a solution wherein the solvent for said catalyst solution has a density equal to or less than that of the monomer being polymerized and the catalyst solution has a density less than water.
