An apparatus for the assembly and alignment of a video display device having a base plate and a holding device, the base plate including a plurality of movable adjusting studs projecting therefrom for engaging a plurality of alignment holes located in a plurality of structured plates of the video display device. The holding device includes a plurality of adjustable stops for engaging and aligning a spacing frame and a screen plate. Each alignment hole includes a diameter reducing metal ring to ensure precise alignment of the structured plates which are aligned and joined to the spacing frame and screen plate. The video display device is then removed from the apparatus.

Gas discharge display device

A luminescent screen for a picture display apparatus comprising a plate glass screen 1 and a luminophore layer 6 formed on the glass plate in depressions 4 that are surrounded by a black pigmented contrasted border layer 5. The luminescent screen has an optimum color purity and in particular off-color combinations on the surface of the layer of the respective color should be avoided and is undesirable. For this purpose, the invention provides that the luminous colors of the luminophore layer 6 comprising the luminous colors red (R), green (G) and blue (B) are applied to the screen glass plate 1 in a raster of line-like systematic arrangements by using a silk screening process. Luminescent screen according to the invention is employed as a flat plasma picture screen.

A luminescent screen for flat image display devices, having improved light efficiency comprises a perforated plate (5) positioned on the inside of a luminescent screen glass (1), with the plate holes (6) extending above the individual spaced-apart luminescent areas or phosphor dots and the hole walls (6a) being provided with a metallization layer (8) and/or an extension of the luminescent layer (7) on the glass screen (1). In preferred embodiments, the plate holes are etched so that each hole is enlarged toward the front of the screen and the walls thereof assumes at least an approximately parabolical shape opening toward the glass screen and such angular walls are at least partially coated with a metal layer and/or a luminescent material layer for further improved light efficiency (FIG. 4).

Luminescent screens for flat image display devices

A control plate for a gas discharge display device has a mechanically stable carrier plate of an electrically insulating material which has metallized column conductor tracks on one side and metallized row conductor tracks on an opposite side which in combination form a matrix of perpendicular rows and columns. The carrier plate has perforations extending through plate at points of intersection of the rows and columns. Each row and column is separately energizeable for selected transfer of electrons in the display device from one side of the plate to the other. The metallized tracks on each side extend a distance into the perforations so as to prevent charge accumulation within the perforations which would otherwise impair the control obtainable by the plate. The metallized portions of the perforations are separated by a ring of exposed carrier plate which is substantially nonconducting having a resistance of 100 megaohms or greater.

A luminescent screen for flat image display devices, having improved light efficiency comprises a glass screen (1) provided on its inner surface with a pattern of recesses (2) corresponding to a desired luminescent dot pattern with luminescent dot surfaces (5) positioned not only along the bottom of such recesses but also along the upwardly extending recess walls and a contrasting border layer (3) is positioned on the land areas between each recess. In producing such screens, the contrasting border layer is utilized as an etch mask for the recesses and as an application mask for the luminescent material.

A double mask raster method for application of a number of different slurries in a discrete pattern, to produce a raster such as can be used in color television picture tubes, has a first mask having a plurality of apertures therein which remains immovably on the substrate throughout the application of all slurries. A separate second mask having a smaller number of aligned apertures therein is utilized with each successive application of a different slurry, allowing the slurry to penetrate the two masks to the substrate only where apertures in the two masks are aligned. The method may be used to apply slurries to flat or curved substrates in a vertical or horizontal position adapted for conventional spraying, or by means of electrostatic spraying.

Double mask raster method for applying slurry in a discrete pattern

A slurry comprised of particulated glass-forming substances, with or without particulated relatively clear or light-colored metal oxides, dispersed in a photolacquer is applied as a uniform layer on a surface of a color image screen. Such layer is then developed via conventional photoforming techniques to produce sites or windows for phosphor dots and the resultant window-containing layer is heated, prior or subsequent to application of phosphor dots in such windows, at a temperature in the range of about 350.degree. to 500.degree. C. In instances where metal oxide particles are present in the slurry, the resultant layer becomes opaque or dark upon tempering and in cases where only pure glass-forming substance particles are in the slurry, the resultant layer becomes opaque or dark upon tempering in a reducing atmosphere. Electrical conductivity may be imparted to the light-absorbing coating by addition of selective conductive materials to the initial slurry.

Method of producing light-absorbing edging about phosphor dots on color

Luminescent materials are adhered to TV color picture screens or image display device screens by coating the inner surface of a glass screen substrate with a conductive or non-conductive C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alcoholic or carboxylic solution containing oxygen-rich organic materials selected from the group consisting of silicon salts of relative low molecular weight carboxylic acids, tin salts of relatively low molecular weight carboxylic acids (which can be optionally doped to render them conductive, if desired) or mixtures thereof or a doped tin compound, at least partially drying such coating, as at a temperature of about 150.degree. C., applying a select pattern of luminescent materials onto such partially dried coating and curing or tempering the resultant structure, as at a temperature of about 500.degree. C. so that the luminescent material is firmly embedded within the conductive/non-conductive coating.
