A machine for the manufacture of chipboards or fibreboards comprises a pressure drum (1) and an endless steel belt (2) which wraps the pressure drum (1) around part of its periphery and forms there a compacting line (P) in which is for a sufficiently long time compacted and cured, by the action of pressure and temperature, material which is brought into it and which comprises lignocellulose or cellulose, is reduced to chips or fibres and is provided with an adhesive curable by heat. The compacting pressure and the heating are produced by extensive pressure shoes (10, 13, 14, 15) comprising a hydrostatic bearing pocket (11) supplied with hot pressurised oil. The pressure drum (1) is provided with a non-rotatable carrier (19) and a jacket (20) which is rotatable about it and is supported by supporting elements (21) supplied with hot pressurised oil, so that the jacket (20) is simultaneously heated and adjustable pressure forces without bearing loading are produced, while a uniform smooth gap is obtained.

The press guide roll (15) or web guide roll (4) comprises a fiber-reinforced plastic roll tube (20; 6) and a wire layer (7) wound on the surface of the roll tube (20; 6) in order to form substantially peripherally directed grooves (17). On either side of the roll middle (M), complementary sections (7b, 7c) of the windings (7) are inclined slightly relative to the peripheral direction and thus form a wire layer which is mirror symmetrically disposed about the roll's middle plane (M). The web guide roll (4) therefore laterally guides and automatically centers the material web.

In a rotary printing press with a printing cylinder and a counter roller, such as an impression cylinder, for example, and a print web guided between them, faultless print quality across the entire width is attained, even with an extremely wide print web and a correspondingly slim printing cylinder. The printing cylinder is provided with a fixed support and a jacket, which is rotatable around it, and is supported by a row of support elements with a printing pressure which is controlled individually or in groups. With this arrangement, a uniform printing pressure profile across the print web width and, simultaneously, a print gap which is generally uniform are attained. Deformations and displacements of the printing cylinder jacket cross-wise to the printing plane are avoided in that additional cross-bracing elements for exerting a restoring force on the printing cylinder jacket cross-wise to the printing plane are provided. The restoring force of the cross-bracing elements is controlled by position sensors or bearing pressure sensors in such a way that the position of the printing cylinder jacket is maintained even with particularly lengthy and slim printing cylinders. Oscillations of the printing cylinder are prevented by hydrostatic support elements which have a damping effect.

Rotary printing press

A printing cylinder for a rotary printing press has a support, which is fixed against relative rotation, and a jacket rotatable around the latter, which is supported by a row of support elements, disposed axially side-by-side and individually controllable and radially displaceable at least in part in order to attain an even printing pressure across the width of the cylinder while avoiding any bending of the jacket. The jacket is constructed of three coaxial tubes, an interior tube, a filler body and a printing forme support, at least two of which, or even all three, in the rest state, are separated by a small gap so that they can be easily pulled off each other and exchanged in order to change the printing press over to another print pattern or another diameter or register. By charging the sealed interior chamber with pressure, for example with the use of the fluid pressure required for the support elements, the gap(s) are closed, so that the individual jacket parts have a press fit with each other and rotate together. By reducing the interior pressure to lower pressures, for example atmospheric pressure or a partial vacuum, it is possible to open the gap(s) again selectively.

Printing cylinder of a rotary printing press and a method for use

In a deflection controlled roll (1) having a non-rotatable carrier (4), a rotatable roll jacket (7) is supported against the carrier (4) by a number of hydrostatic supporting elements (8) with adjustable pressing force. The supporting elements (8) run in corotating bearing races (9) mounted loosely in the roll jacket (7) and corotating with the roll jacket (7) but independently therefrom. These bearing races (9) are provided on both sides with flanks (15) for axial positioning, which cooperate with side bearing pockets on the supporting element (8) and form an axial guideway for the bearing race (9). Automatic positioning with maintenance of a defined bearing gap is achieved by a toroidal cross-sectional or a tapered ring-shaped construction of the running surfaces of the supporting element (8) and the bearing race (9).

Deflection controlled roll

In the plastic foil-producing apparatus where a fluent plastic mass is cooled in a roll nip between a roller member and a counter roller to a defined predetermined solidification temperature, the roller member includes a non-rotatable support member and a rotatable roller shell supported at the non-rotatable support member by one or more support elements. The roller shell includes a plurality of coaxial zones, namely, an inner soft rubber zone and a thin outer metallic zone possessing good thermal conductivity, for example, formed of copper or silver or alloys thereof, the outer surface of which is mirror smooth, for instance, chromium plated. The roller surface is cooled by cooling gas nozzles regulated by a temperature sensor, so that the temperature of the roller member in the roll nip assumes an exactly defined temperature. Consequently, there can be fabricated a plastic foil, for example, formed of polyethylene having a narrow solidification temperature range and possessing a defined thickness profile while preventing sticking of the plastic foil at the outer surface of the roller member.

Controlled deflection roll

In a controlled deflection roll having a roll shell rotatable about a stationary carrier and braced by one or more support elements against the stationary carrier, the roll shell comprises an inner roll shell part and an outer roll shell part which, during operation of the controlled deflection roll, form a press or force fit with respect to one another, for instance, due to excess pressure in the interior of the controlled deflection roll or due to elastic pre-biasing of the parts of the roll shell. Upon pressure relief or the existence of negative pressure within the controlled deflection roll a play or clearance is formed between the outer roll shell part and the inner roll shell part of the roll shell which enables dismantling and exchange of the outer roll shell part of the roll shell without the need to dismantle the controlled deflection roll or to remove such from the machine.

Within the impression cylinder of a rotogravure press and within the roll shell thereof there are provided over the width of the impression cylinder a number of layer packages which can be separately supplied with electrical charge in order to apply electrostatic charges to the impression cylinder surface for the purpose of augmenting printing of a material web. By differently controlling segments of the impression cylinder, there can be accommodated different widths of the material web to be processed. In order to concentrate the electric charge at the actually used region of the impression cylinder and for protecting the zones of the impression cylinder which are not currently being used, there are provided internally of the roll jacket, in axial direction thereof, a number of support elements arranged adjacent one another and braced against a central carrier. These support elements are controlled such that only the support elements in those segments, where there is also supplied electrical charge, exert a pressing force. At the end regions of the impression cylinder, there can be provided counter support elements which are only controlled when there is not applied any electrostatic charge at the end regions of the impression cylinder, in other words, when printing a narrower material web. Hence, in this situation no electrical charge is transferred at the not used roll end regions and the impression cylinder is protected against wear and abrasion.

The hydrostatic support arrangement comprises a piston-and-cylinder unit and the piston thereof is provided with a bearing shoe. The hydrostatic support arrangement is provided with a separate supply of pressure oil into the chamber of the cylinder of the piston-and-cylinder unit and to a further chamber arranged between the piston and the bearing shoe. The pressure oil passes from this further chamber through throttle bores to stabilizing pockets of the bearing shoe. A bearing pump for the supply of the pressure oil to the further chamber of the bearing shoe comprises a volumetric pump having a high delivery capacity for the delivery of large quantities of oil, while a pressure pump for the supply of the pressure oil to the cylinder of the piston-and-cylinder unit comprises a pressure-regulated pump having a smaller delivery capacity for delivering smaller quantities of oil. The bearing pump and the pressure pump are operatively interconnected such that the bearing pump delivers pressure oil to both the pressure pump and the further chamber of the bearing shoe.

Hydrostatic support arrangement

The bottom roll of a roll stack in a calender is constructed as a controlled deflection roll equipped with a non-rotatable carrier or support beam and a roll shell rotatable about the non-rotatable carrier. The roll shell is supported on the non-rotatable carrier by means of hydraulic support or pressure elements. The non-rotatable carrier is supported with respect to the calender stand by means of hydraulic carrier support devices. For the rapid opening of the calender and to avoid damage to the roll shell, initially the pressure exerted on the roll shell support elements is reduced in a sudden manner and only after a predetermined time-delay is there reduced the pressure exerted on the carrier support devices. The time-delay is chosen such that the pressure peak occurring in the roll shell support elements due to the springing back or recovery of the non-rotatable carrier has dropped to a safe value and the risk of damage to the roll shell, such as would occur in the case of a simultaneous pressure drop, is avoided.

Method and control apparatus for separating the rolls of a calender

During the melt spinning process for producing metal foils having an amorphous structure, molten metal is cast through a slot-like nozzle onto a surface or wall which is rapidly moved past the nozzle. A particularly rapid quenching and cooling rate of the solidifying melt is achieved by providing cooling support elements which are supplied with a cooling pressure medium, on one side of the moved surface or wall and which aide is located opposite to or remote from the nozzle. Advantageously, the surface or wall is constructed as a thin-walled cylindrical shell or tube which is elastically deformable to some extent. In its shell interior, there are provided a number of rows of cooling support elements which may be controlled by thickness sensors and temperature profile sensors. There is thus rendered possible, the continuous production of amorphous metal foils.

Method of, and apparatus for, the continuous casting of rapidly

The calender rolls of a calender are provided with heat insulating protective shields which can be laterally pivoted open and with heat insulating end covers or closures at the ends of the rolls. At least one of the rolls is provided with a blower device for generating air flows or jets which can be regulated over the length of such roll to equalize the temperature over the length of this roll.
