Backing arrangement for supporting a welded seam extending on a curved path which is formed between two curved work pieces by friction stir welding with a welding tool separate from the backing arrangement, which backing arrangement comprises a backing body which is intended to bear upon the work pieces opposite said welding tool to assume at least a part of the compression force that is exerted by the welding tool against the work pieces to keep the material plasticized during the welding operation in the area of the welded seam The backing body is equipped with a shoulder which exhibits a bottom surface turned outward, via which the backing body is equipped to bear on the work pieces. A driving mechanism is situated to rotate and/or oscillate the shoulder so that the bottom surface of the shoulder can thereby be made to carry out a rotating and/or oscillating motion against the work pieces for creating fictional heat in them.

Backing arrangement for use in friction stir welding

Welding headfor friction stir welding, adapted for connection and driving of a toolintended for simultaneous friction stir welding from two opposite surfaces on an object for welding, comprising a tool holder, a force-generating deviceand a rotary driving devicewhich, during operation, can impart to the connected toola cyclic movement around the centre axisof the tool and relative to the object for welding arranged in conjunction with the welding head. The force-generating device is controllable during operation and adapted so as, during operation, to act between a primary shoulderand a secondary shoulderon a toolconnected in the tool holder. The invention also comprises a welding system for friction stir welding, with the force between the shoulders of the tool being controlled depending on the current torque for rotary driving. Also indicated are a method for initiating friction stir welding and computer program for such a method.

The invention relates to a welding apparatus comprising a welding unit, a work-table for supporting the workpieces to be welded, and the clamping means for clamping the workpieces to the work-table in the direction towards one another during the welding operation. The welding unit comprises a friction stir welding head and a fusion welding head.

Welding apparatus

The invention concerns an apparatus for friction stir welding, comprising a welding unit including a welding head, a worktable including a backing unit to support the workpieces to be welded together along their joint line, and clamping means to clamp the workpieces to the worktable in a direction towards one another during the welding operation. The backing unit consists of at least two backing parts or of at least one backing part and one additional welding head, said backing parts being freely exchangeable, one for the other, before each welding operation as is also each backing part freely exchangeable for the additional welding head, and vice versa.

The invention relates to a welding assembly for joining together workpieces (,) along a joint between said pieces by means of friction stir welding. The welding assembly comprises a welding probe (,) intended to be advanced along said joint during the welding operation. The welding probe comprises a body (,) and a pin (,), the body being arranged to be pressed against the upper faces of the workpieces during the welding operation whereas the pin is arranged to be moved along said joint during the welding while being rotated and pressed against said workpieces. The pin (,) and the body (,) are also so arranged relative to one another as to be mutually movable, allowing said pin and said body to perform different movement patterns relative to one another.
