The invention relates to the fastening of incandescent coil filaments to current lead-in wires in electric lamps. One end (,) of the current lead-in wires is flattened and U-shaped. The U-shaped segment (,) of the current lead-in wire forms a gap-like seat (,) for a coiled incandescent coil-filament end (,), the gap width of which is smaller than the outside diameter of the incandescent coil-filament end (,).

To provide a halogen incandescent bulb with controlled variation in wall ckness of the bulb, a bulb tube (20) first has a cup region (26) formed thereon. The cup region, by radial application of force, for example by rollers (22), is constricted, and the constriction then pulled to form a small, closed projecting tip (19). Mold jaws (27) then mold the shape of the bulb; the mold jaws are formed with a cavity (29') to receive the projecting tip (19) which, then, has the end cut off to provide an attachment cannula (30) for the pumping tube (32). The pumping tube is melted on the nipple (29) of the cup (26) of the bulb. A filament mount (8) with filaments (9) is then introduced, and pinch jaws (35) pinch-seal the filament mount in the bulb and finish-shape the bulb. The bulb can then be flushed, evacuated, and filled with the requisite halogen containing fill through the pumping tube (32), which then is tipped off.

Method of making a halogen incandescent lamp

Medium/high voltage incandescent lamp and reflector combination

To provide for improved light distribution of a vehicular headlight furning both depressed-beam and high-beam illumination, a shadow cap (9, 25) partly surrounds a main light source, typically filaments of halogen incandescent lamp, located in a reflector (2) which has two segments (14, 15) of different contours. The first one (14) of the reflector segments is optically associated with the main filament furnishing depressed-beam illumination, and this segment has a free-formed surface reflection contour. A second segment of the reflector is optically associated with an auxiliary filament (8, 18). The shadow cap (9, 25) provides a shadow angle of between 100.degree. and 140.degree. with respect to light emitted from the main filament (7) to define a shadow zone (12) and a light zone (13) on the reflector. The shadow cap is shaped and positioned with respect to the auxiliary filament (8, 18) such that the auxiliary filament is located within the shadow zone (12). The auxiliary filament is located by an offset of between 0.25 and 2 times below the optical axis (A) of the reflector, and the spatial distribution of the segments is such that the reflector is associated with a light zone and a shadow zone, respectively, as formed by the shadow cap. For high-beam illumination, with only the auxiliary filament (8, 18) energized, a concentrated beam and somewhat spread illumination based on reflection from the first reflector segment (14) is obtained; when the main filament (7) is additionally energized, concentrated beam and defined spread-out illumination results.

To positively position the components of a filament mount, including filats (6, 7) and a cover cap (11) shrouding a filament, for use in a dual-filament automotive-type lamp, one of the current supply leads (10') is extended towards the exhaust tip (4) of the lamp. A guide element (13), which terminates in an at least essentially part-cylindrical region, is melted-in into the exhaust tip (4), and receives the end portion (12) of the current supply lead. If the element is springy, for example a spiral spring permitting compression, the spring (13) and the current lead wire (10') can be welded together, particularly for lamps which have low thermal loading. In lamps which have high thermal loading, the end (12) of the current lead (10') is preferably received loosely within the spiral spring to minimize heat transfer; additionally, a heat insulating jacket (14), for example in form of a small ceramic tube or a glass coating, can be interposed between the spiral spring (13) and the current supply lead.

To prevent carburation of a tungsten filament, the fill within the bulb is ormed by an inert gas, for example xenon or krypton, and an additive which is formed by a single halogenated hydrocarbon in which iodine is bound, and further includes at least one atom of bromine or chlorine; suitable additives are: CH.sub.2 ClI, CHCl.sub.2 I, CHClI.sub.2, CHClBrI, CH.sub.2 BrI, present in from between about 1.times.10.sup.-8 to 5.times.10.sup.-6 mol per cm.sup.3 of the internal volume of the bulb; particularly preferred are chlor iodine methane (CH.sub.2 ClI), present in about 1-3.times.10.sup.-7 mol per cm.sup.3 of the internal volume of the bulb.

The lamp bulb (1) has two filaments (4, 5) positioned within the bulb and rallel to the longitudinal axis (L) thereof, for example located at an axis of symmetry passing through the longitudinal axis, or in two respective planes of symmetry (E4, E5) which are, respectively, parallel to the axis of symmetry (S) of the lamp, the two filaments being preferably symmetrically positioned with respect to the axis of symmetry of the lamp (L). When located in a sealed-beam headlight, one of the filaments forms a depressed beam and the other the high beam, the high beam being preferably positioned along the axis of the reflector, at or close to the focal point thereof, for example by an off-center positioning of the bulb within the reflector.

To permit the use of hard glass rather than silica or quartz glass, a bulb of hard glass is drawn from a length of hard glass tubing, the exhaust tube being molded on adjacent the rounded-off bulb. A mount assembly composed of filaments and two or more lead-in wires is pinch-sealed into the bulb such that pre-oxidized portions of the lead-in wires come to lie within the pinch seal. The pinch seal is rendered vacuum-tight and shaped in separate steps including repeated heating to fuse the wires to the glass and to shape the pinch seal. Subsequent to filling with inert gas, the lamp manufacture is terminated by tipping off the exhaust tube.
