Novel tetraglycidyl ethers of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is a group ##STR2## R is hydrogen or methyl, and n is an integer from 2 to 4. The novel tetraglycidyl ethers can be used in curable mixtures, together with a curing agent for epoxide resins, in particular for the protection of surfaces.

Copolyesters formed from 1,4-butanediol and a dicarboxylic acid mixture of, relative to the polyester, 8-12 mol % of sebacic acid or of an amount equal by weight of a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having 6 to 36 C atoms, 26-32 mol % of terephthalic acid and 7.5 to 12 mol % of isophthalic acid are hot melt adhesives which are characterized by resistance to ageing even at elevated temperatures, good adhesive strength and a relatively high heat resistance of the bonded areas.

Copolyester from 1,4-butanediol and a dicarboxylic acid mixture

Thermoplastic copolyesters which have a minimum relative viscosity of 1.4 and contain, based on the polyester, (a) 40-50 mol % of units of terephthalic acid, (b) 0-10 mol % of units of aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or other aromatic dicarboxylic acids, (c) 15-30 mol % of units of ethylene glycol, (d) 34.5-15 mol % of units of diethylene glycol and (e) 0.5-5 mol % of units of polybutylene glycol with a molecular weight of 650 or the same amount by weight with a molecular weight of between 400 and 4,000, it being possible for up to 10 mol % of the units of ethylene glycol and/or diethylene glycol to be replaced by units of alkylenediols having 3 to 10 C atoms and/or units of a bisphenol dihydroxyalkyl ether, are outstandingly suitable as hot-melt adhesives.

Thermoplastic copolyesters, processes for their preparation and their use

Thermoplastic copolyesters which have a minimum relative viscosity of 1.7 and contain (a) 35-47.5 mol % of units of terephthalic acid, (b) 15-2.5 mol % of units of isophthalic acid, (c) 10-30 mol % of units of ethylene glycol and (d) 40-20 mol % of units of diethylene glycol, it being possible for up to 9 mol % of the units of ethylene glycol to be replaced by units of a bisphenol dihydroxyalkyl ether, are very suitable as hot-melt adhesives.

New 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-oxiranes and the corresponding thiiranes are used as stabilizers for polymers. The oxiranes are prepared from the corresponding olefins by reaction with percarboxylic acids or from alkali phenoxides and epichlorohydrines. The thiiranes are prepared from the oxiranes by the usual sulfidation methods.

3,5-DIALKYL-4-HYDROXYBENZYL-OXIRANES

Cyclic acetals of 2-epoxy-propoxy-pivaldehydes. They can be used by themselves, if they contain two or more epoxy groups, or as reactive diluents in a mixture with other epoxide resins, and they give mouldings of excellent mechanical properties on curing with amines or acid anhydrides.

Epoxide resin foams are manufactured by curing a mixture which contains an epoxide resin, a blowing agent, a surface-active agent and the tetraglycidyl ester of cyclohexanone- or methylcyclohexanone-2,2,6,6-tetrapropionic acid, with a Lewis acid or an addition compound or complex compound of a Lewis acid. The foams obtained show a homogeneous pore structure and no tendency to crack formation, and are heat-stable and largely light-fast. They can be employed in sandwich constructions, as insulating materials against heat and cold, sound and mechanical impact, and in the electrical industry.
