Methods and devices for the separation of particles () in a compartment () of a fluidic microsystem () are described, in which the movement of a liquid () in which particles () are suspended with a predetermined direction of flow through the compartment (), and the generation of a deflecting potential in which at least a part of the particles () is moved relative to the liquid in a direction of deflection are envisaged, whereby further at least one focusing potential is generated, so that at least a part of the particles is moved opposite to the direction of deflection relative to the liquid by dielectrophoresis under the effect of high-frequency electrical fields, and guiding of particles with different electrical, magnetic or geometric properties into different flow areas () in the liquid takes place.

Method and device for withdrawing suspended microparticles from a fluidic microsystem

A microsystem adapted for dielectrophoretic manipulation of particles in a suspension liquid wherein the microsystem has a channel with channel walls and a longitudinal extension. An electrode arrangement is present which has at least one microelectrode on at least one of the channel walls. This acts to generate a field barrier which crosses the channel at least partly. The microelectrode has a band-shape or has a multitude of straight electrode sections connected to each other. The band-shape has a predetermined curvature or the straight electrode sections are arranged with predetermined different angles so that the field barrier has a predetermined curvature relative to the longitudinal extension of the channel.

Process and device for permeation of biological objects

For manipulation of particles in a fluidic microsystem ( ) in which the particles are moved in a predetermined reference direction in a suspension liquid, the microsystem ( ) is closed off at least at its end ( ) pointing to the reference direction. The particles move under the influence of centrifugal forces and/or gravitational forces in the suspension liquid which is stationary in relation to the microsystem ( ), with the centrifugal forces and/or gravitational forces essentially extending parallel to the reference direction. Method and device for manipulating particles in microsystems

Disclosed is a process for manipulating microscopic dielectric particles in which particles are exposed to an electric field. In disadvantaged processes the particles are exposed to inhomogeneous electric field and are polarized by them. The polarized particles are moved in the direction of higher field strength. These processes permit no reversal of the traveling direction of the particles. The particles are enriched at the electrode so that they cannot be retained in free space. In the invented process the particles are exposed to high-frequency field traveling in one or more prescribed direction, by which the particles are subject to a force which sets them in a motion that is strongly synchronous to the field. With the aid of a device for carrying out the invented process, the particles can be manipulated very flexibly. By means of linearly or circularly disposed electrodes, the particles can be moved on linear paths in any direction including through branched microstructures, they can be separated according to their dielectric properties and retained without contact. Applications are in the fields of biotechnology and molecular separation, focussing and microtransport technology.
