The present invention produces a cold gas stream having a constant temperature and pressure. The gas stream is obtained from two initial streams, one being a liquefied gas and the other being a gas at ambient temperature. The liquefied gas stream is combined with the warm gas stream, causing the liquid to vaporize. The two streams are combined in proportions that yield a cold gas mixture having a desired temperature. The resulting cold gas mixture is directed into an insulated container having a volume significantly larger than the volume of the conduits through which the streams flow. The container therefore acts as a buffer to reduce pressure fluctuations in the stream. A temperature equalization coil is located in the interior of the container. The coil has one open end which communicates with the interior region of the container, the other end of the coil being connected to an outlet line. The cold gas in the coil remains within the coil for a relatively long time, and comes into thermal equilibrium with cold gas outside the coil. Thus, temperature variations in the cold gas stream are reduced. The cold gas which is withdrawn from the chamber is essentially constant in both temperature and pressure. The invention also includes the use of the cold gas, produced as described above, to atomize molten metal to form a metal powder.

System and method for atomization of liquid metal

This invention is a method for removing dissolved gas from a liquid. The liquid is directed into a container, and is atomized upon entry. At the same time, a relatively inert gas is also directed into the container, so as to contact the atomized droplets. The addition of the inert gas to the container alters the relative partial pressure of the dissolved gas, especially when gas of the same type has been previously removed from the interior of the container. The result is that both the dissolved gas and the inert gas tend to vent from the container. The droplets of atomized liquid settle towards the bottom of the container, to form a pool of liquid. This liquid can then be withdrawn from the container. The liquid leaving the container can also be analyzed for its dissolved gas content. If the output liquid is not sufficiently degassed, the rate of flow of inert gas into the container is increased. Increasing the flow of inert gas into the container reduces the dissolved gas content of the output liquid. It is also possible to extract residual moisture from the gas being vented from the container, and to recycle that mositure to the container.

Apparatus for removing gas from a liquid

A method and apparatus for expanding a length of flexible tubing so it can be placed over a cylindrically shaped member which has an outside diameter larger than the inside diameter of the tubing. This is accomplished by first expanding the flexible tubing mechanically with a flexible cage and mandrel to the desired inside diameter and then freezing it at this expanded size by spraying it with a cooling media such as liquid nitrogen. The frozen expanded tube can then be easily placed over the cylindrically shaped member so that when the expanded tubing warms and returns to its original configuration, it will generate a tight pressure bond to the inserted member.

A compact integrated gas phase separator and subcooler for removing gas phases from a liquid gas and subcooling the liquid gas comprises a subcooler with a subcooler container having a subcooled bath of liquid gas, a gas phase separator having a container submerged in the subcooler bath, a tube for delivering liquid gas from a supply line into the gas phase separator, a coil extending from the gas phase separator for delivering the liquid through the subcooler bath to subcool the liquid and deliver it to an outlet tube to the supply lines. A takeoff tube and float valve delivers gas and liquid from the separator to the subcooler, and the heat from the coil vaporizes some of the liquid in the subcooler to reduce the level of the bath and to operate the float valve to deliver the gas from the separator to the subcooler and to replenish the level of the liquid in the subcooler by delivering liquid to it from the separator.
