The present invention relates to a glucan having a weight average molar mass of 15,000 to 50,000 g/mol on a single chain basis and a weight average molar mass in aqueous solution on an aggregate basis of 4 to 20&#xd7;10g/mol and existing in gel form in aqueous solution at a concentration &#x2265;1% at 25&#xb0; C. and neutral pH and having a melting temperature (gel to sol) of 30 to 44&#xb0; C. when the glucan is dissolved in water at a concentration of 2%, methods for the production thereof, medical uses thereof, physical supports having the glucan applied thereto or impregnated thereon and in vitro methods of proliferation of skin cells which comprise contacting a population of skin cells with the glucan.

Glucans

The present invention relates to a gel composition comprising a glucan and a gelling agent, said composition having a melting point (gel to sol) above 37&#xb0; C., as well as to the uses of this composition in therapy, in particular in wound healing.

This invention provides a method for introducing substances into cells comprising contacting a composition comprising orally administered beta-glucan with said cells. This invention also provides a method for introducing substances into a subject comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of the above compositions. The substance which could be delivered orally includes but is not limited to peptides, proteins, RNAs, DNAs, chemotherapeutic agents, biologically active agents, plasmids, and other small molecules and compounds. Finally, this invention provides a composition comprising orally administered beta-glucan capable of enhancing efficacy of IgM and different uses of the said composition.

A therapeutic composition for treatment of cancer in a mammal is disclosed. The composition comprises an effective amount of a yeast beta-glucan composition which is suitable for oral administration and for absorption through the gastrointestinal tract of the mammal. The above therapeutic composition may further comprise antitumor antibodies or cancer vaccine composition, wherein the antitumor activities of the antitumor antibodies or the cancer vaccine composition are enhanced by the yeast glucan.

Solubilization of such yeast cell glucan is further disclosed to extend the usefulness of yeast cell glucan as an adjuvant.

A method of increasing immunostimulation in animals by administering to the animal a glucan product comprising a branched &#x3b2;-(1,3) glucan with &#x3b2;-(1,3)-linked side chains being attached by a &#x3b2;-(1,6)-linkage and being essentially free of side chains containing more than four &#x3b2;-(1,6)-bound glucose units.

The invention relates to the use of nanoscalar water-soluble &#x3b2;-(1,3) glucans, which are essentially free from &#x3b2;-(1,6) links and have particle diameters ranging from 10 to 300 nm for producing cosmetic and/or pharmaceutical preparations. When applied topically, the especially fine dispersion of the particles, compared to prior art glucans, facilitates their rapid penetration of both the stratum corneum of the skin and the keratin fibres of the hair.
