Photographic silverhalide containing materials having improved mechanical and electrostatic properties are obtained by adding to at least one of the layers of the material a cross-linked polymer of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid which is prepared either (a) by inverse emulsion polymerization of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid monomers in the presence of polyfunctional cross-linking monomers and an emulsifier and breaking of the emulsion and redispersion of the polymer particles in water; or (3) by emulsion polymerization of aliphatic esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid in water in the presence of polyfunctional cross-linking monomers and of an emulsifier, followed by saponification of the polymer.

Photographic silver halide material with cross-linked particulate

For the production of matted outer layers of photographic silver halide recording materials particles of a copolymer of maleic acid anhydride and a C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 monoolefin are dispersed in an aqueous solution of a hydrophilic colloid and the dispersion thus formed is applied to one or both surfaces of the photographic recording material and the layer is dried.

Process for the production of matting layers

In a process for the preparation of matted photographic layers gelatine particles which are dispersed in a water-in-oil emulsion are hardened, separated from the emulsion, redispersed in water, added to the layer which is required to be matted, and the casting composition is applied to a substrate and dried.
