A system and method are provided for fragmenting a crystalline lens, to facilitate its removal from the lens bag during an ophthalmic laser surgery. First, a predetermined pattern is used to make Laser Induced Optical Breakdown (LIOB) cuts that section the lens into asymmetrical, operational segments. At least one operational segment is then selected and softened with a plurality of compact LIOB cuts. Once softened, the selected segment is aspirated. The remaining operational segments are then subsequently removed. During a procedure, an imaging unit can monitor movements of the lens bag to ensure proper placement of the LIOB cuts on the lens.

System and method for performing lens fragmentation

A system and method are provided in which an iris or eye image is taken during a refractive diagnostic analysis. The image is employed for aligning data from the analysis with data from other refractive analysis instruments, as well as aligning a refractive surgical tool, such as a laser, with the eye for treatment. Further, the stored iris image is compared with the patient's iris before treatment, verifying that the correct eye is to be treated with a developed treatment pattern. A variety of refractive instruments can be used, such as corneal topography systems and wavefront aberration systems.

Iris recognition and tracking for optical treatment

The invention relates to a system and a method for the treatment of a patient's eye. The system comprises a laser apparatus, a scanning apparatus and an eye tracking apparatus for determining the actual position of the patient's eye and for generating alignment data of the patient's eye relative to a reference position of the patient's eye to the laser, said eye tracking apparatus being provided with a desired treatment shot file. Said scanning apparatus is connected via a first bidirectional bus to the eye tracking apparatus, said laser apparatus is connected via a second bidirectional bus to the eye tracking apparatus. The eye tracking apparatus adjusts the position data for each shot based on said alignment data of the patient's eye and provides aiming control signals representative of the target position data to the scanning apparatus for said shot via said first bidirectional bus. The eye tracking apparatus comprises a comparator for comparing the target position data with the actual position data provided by the scanning apparatus for the shot to be fired. Moreover, said eye tracking apparatus is sending a command signal to the laser apparatus via said second bidirectional bus for firing the shot when the target position data is equal to the actual position data of the scanning apparatus for the shot to be fired.

System and method for the treatment of a patients eye working at high speed

An aperture card is provided for insertion into a laser refractive ablation system for use in laser ablating the cornea. The aperture card is designed for single surgical use for surgical precautionary considerations and to achieve the highest quality ablations, in addition to reproducibility. The aperture card is loaded into the laser refractive ablation system in a path between the laser system and the eye. The aperture card is precisely located by positioning means and ablative lasing action is inhibited if the card is not positioned within tolerance. Alternatively, the laser system can determine the position of the aperture card and adjust a computed ablation profile or otherwise adjust the optical system to adapt for any misalignment of the apertures in the aperture card. The card contains a 'soft spot' aperture capable of shaping a spatial intensity distribution with a unique profile. The profile has a substantially flat top while the sides of the profile slope until an ablation intensity threshold is reached, at which point the sides become substantially vertical. The card can contain more than one soft spot aperture along with a 'hard spot' aperture that creates a square-shaped profile used for testing fluence. Each soft spot aperture is formed by a central aperture and a plurality of holes of different sizes surrounding the central aperture and arranged such that the overall diffractive effect produces a soft spot spatial intensity profile compared to the hard, square-sided profile.
