A grinding wheel assembly has a support disk centered on an axis and having an outer edge and a pair of axially opposite faces. An annular abrasive ring is juxtaposed with the outer edge, and a flexible hinge formation joins the ring to the outer edge of the disk at one of the faces. An actuator body of controlledly radially variable dimension joins the ring to outer edge of the disk at the other of the faces for deforming the ring and flexing the hinge formation so as to vary a shape of an outer face of the ring radially of the axis. Thus with this system the exact shape of the outer face of the abrasive ring can be controlled remotely. The control can be very accurate, and can be monitored by sensors in a feedback system to ensure exact position of the outer ring surface.

Grinding disk and apparatus

An apparatus for grinding a cam having an outer surface with outwardly convex and outwardly concave portions has a frame and a main drive on the frame for holding the cam and rotating it about a main axis. A pair of drive motors having respective output axes generally diametrally flank the main axis. Respective carriages carrying the drive motors are shiftable on the frame radially of the main axis. One of the motors is shiftable into an inner position in which the main axis extends through the one drive motor. Respective grinding wheels are rotatable by the motors about the respective axes, and the wheel of the one motor is of substantially smaller diameter than the wheel of the other motor.

Camshaft-grinding machine

A workpiece having a planar face the workpiece is rotated about a workpiece axis substantially perpendicular to the planar workpiece face, and a grinding disk centered on a disk axis is rotated about the disk axis. The disk has an annular planar disk face perpendicular to and centered on the disk axis and an annular frustoconical disk face extending from an edge of the planar disk face, centered on the disk axis, and angled inward from the planar disk face. A portion of the annular face is oriented perpendicular to the workpiece axis and pressed against the planar workpiece face to premachine most of the planar workpiece face. Thereafter the disk is pivoted and oriented parallel the planar workpiece face to finish machine the planar workpiece face with the planar disk face.

Method and apparatus for grinding a workpiece surface of rotation

A workpiece has two cylindrical workpiece surfaces centered on respective parallel axes and each flanked by a pair of arcuately rounded and annular corners also centered on the respective axes. Some of the corners have a small radius of curvature and others of the corners have a large radius of curvature. The workpiece is held and rotated about a main axis parallel to the axis of one of the workpiece surfaces. A pair of grinders have wheels generally diametrally flanking the workpiece and each having a central cylindrical outer wheel surface centered on the respective wheel axis and a pair of arcuately rounded edge and surfaces also centered on the respective wheel axis. Two of the edge surfaces are the large radius and the other two of the small radius.

Method of and apparatus for grinding cylindrical and curved surfaces

The invention relates to a method and a device for grinding cams of a camshaft () in a clamp with two grinding spindles (), wherein the cams or cam pairs are each arranged in a mirror image relative to the workpiece rotation axis (), wherein the camshaft () is tensioned and rotated about the longitudinal axis thereof. In the device for carrying out the method, the camshaft () can be inserted into the workpiece receiver () from the side lying opposite the at least one back stay () by means of the loading device.

Method of and apparatus for grinding cams of a camshaft

A machining apparatus has a vertical support frame defining two machining stations spaced apart in a direction, holders in the stations for rotating respective workpieces each about a respective station axis, and a transfer device for loading rough workpieces into the holders and for taking finished workpieces out of the holders. A single machining tool can be shifted in the direction between one position engaging the workpiece in one of the stations and out of engagement with the workpiece in the other of the stations and another position engaging the workpiece in the other station and out of engagement with the workpiece in the one station.

Machining apparatus

A method serves for circumferential grinding of radially non-circular workpieces, in particular for grinding cams (15) or polygons. The workpiece is rotated about a first second axis (13) extending at an angle, preferably of 90.degree., relative to the first axis (18). Starting out from a raw contour, the material at the surface of the workpiece (15) is removed along spiral-shaped paths of a point of action (20), by a plurality of steps corresponding each to one rotation of the workpiece, until intermediate contours and finally a finished contour are obtained, this being achieved by rotating and/or advancing the workpiece and the grinding wheel (11) in a controlled way, in response to data records. Every time an intermediate contour is reached, a new data record is called up for the next rotation of the workpiece. One measures continuously a predetermined absolute dimension (R.sub.Gist) of the workpiece and derives therefrom the existing deviation (.increment.R.sub.G) from a given setpoint value (R.sub.GSOll). The deviation (.increment.R.sub.G) is compared (40) with threshold values and a predetermined number of steps is skipped when the actual values fall below the threshold values.
