An on-line game site involves a question engine coupled with a plurality of terminals controlled by respective players, for (i) sending predefined questions to the players, receiving answers to the questions from the players, and awarding prizes to the players over a given period of time as a function of the answers received, an activity measured by a traffic index representative of the number of players that have played the game over a given time interval, (ii) displaying, together with the questions sent to the players, paid-for advertising insertions, established on the base of a given rate, (iii) evaluating the receipts associated with the paid-for advertising insertions, (iv) establishing an endowment for the prizes to be awarded players over a given period of time, the endowment being a function of the level of the receipts, and (v) repeatedly increasing the endowment corresponding to an increase in the receipts resulting from an increase in the traffic index.

Method of developing the activity of an on-line game site

A game session of the invention comprises, contained within a very short time lapse, the following successive stages: a) selecting a headword that is communicated to the player; b) for each of the N players, determining a first candidate word presenting semantic proximity with the headword, and transmitting said first candidate word to the gaming site, which submits it to a search engine in combination with the headword in order to receive a numerical score; c) presenting the N first candidate words submitted to the site by the various players and then, for each player, selecting from amongst these N words a second candidate word that, on reflection, the player believes represents that one of the first candidate words that corresponds to the highest score obtained during the first game stage. The final stage comprises calculating, for each player, a performance grade as a function at least of the pertinence of the second candidate word submitted during the second game stage, and classifying the players depending on said performance grades.

The site allocates prizes to the players as a function of the answers it receives, where appropriate. The method comprises the steps of: coupling the card (,) as initially configured for the default application, with a terminal (,) of the default application, executing a special transaction for reconfiguring the software of the card for the target application so that the card as reconfigured in this way emulates a card specific to the target application; coupling the card as reconfigured in this way with a terminal (,) of the target application; and executing a transaction of the target application. Subsequently, the card as reconfigured for the target application can be coupled with a terminal of the default application, and another special transaction can be executed to return the card to its software configuration for the default application. Systems for storing and transferring data

A portable independent electronic object designed for storing and transferring data confidentially intended for being coupled to a data transfer device; the said portable object comprising, at least one store module intended for the storage of data in an easily portable form, containing enabling data, coupling means accessible from outside the portable object, enabling the said portable object to be coupled temporarily with the said transfer device, circuits for control of the store, interconnected between the coupling means and the store; the said store and the control circuits being produced in the form of logical microstructures; an indentification comparator connected to the store and to the coupling means, intended for comparing the enabling data contained in the store with a confidential code supplied by the rightful owner of the portable object and introduced into the portable object by way of the said transfer device; the said portable object being characterized in that it includes in addition, a circuit for storage of the errors in confidential code, associated with the identification comparator, intended to keep track permanently of the errors in confidential code, the said storage circuit comprising at least one store element composed of a permanent store.

A system for transferring data between persons, for example in lieu of cash transactions, requires that each person to or from whom data is to be transferred carries a portable electronic device including a memory. Data transfer means in the form of data recording devices are provided at fixed locations which cooperate with the portable electronic devices to transfer data into or out of the portable electronic devices. Preferably both functions may be effected at each location. Data taken from a portable electronic device may be recorded in another portable electronic device for transfer elsewhere. The portable electronic devices may be in the form of flat cards in which logic microstructures are encapsulated.

Data-transfer system

Data, for example, data relating to a bank account, is carried on the person in the form of a small portable means such as a flat card containing encapsulated logic microstructures. The circuitry includes a memory and its control circuits, with inhibitor means preventing access to predetermined sections of the memory. The portable means cooperates with data-transfer means provided at fixed locations. Credit entries in the card are summed and the debit entries are summed and subtracted from the credit entries. Any credit balance may be used to effect a purchase or to obtain an issue of cash money. Coupling of the card and data-transfer means is effected optically by light-emitting diodes cooperating with photovoltaic piles, or by direct electrical contact. Prohibited memory sections carry a code actuating a lock-out latch system. Alternatively a predetermined collection of addresses in the memory is prohibited, setting up one of these addresses actuates the lock-out.
