A fireplace is provided that includes a combustion space delimited by a combustion-space lining and accessible through a door or flap. The combustion-space lining is at least partially composed of a ceramic or glass-ceramic material. The fireplace also includes a wall element disposed on a side of the combustion-space lining that faces away from the combustion space so that an intermediate space is formed between the side and the wall element. A heat exchanger or insulating material ca n be positioned in the intermediate space.

The invention relates to a glass ceramic comprising article, wherein the integral, non-post-processed and non-reworked glass ceramic comprising article comprises at least three different types of microstructures. The microstructures differ in the number and/or size of the crystallites contained per unit volume, and/or in the composition of the crystallites, and/or in the composition of the residual glass phases. The different microstructures are characterized by different relative ion content profiles across a cross-section perpendicular to the transition areas. The relative ion content profiles are determined from intensities which are determined using secondary ion mass spectrometry, and each of the three different types of microstructures preferably has different intensity plateaus for individual ions, wherein the individual ions are components of the main crystal phases.

The fire-resistant glazing includes one or more glass pane, at least one of which consists of glass containing nucleating agents so that the glass pane is at least partially ceramicized when subjected to high thermal stress sufficient to cause ceramicizing, for example during a fire. The glass may be tempered and contains, in percent by weight based on oxide content SiO , 55 to 69; Al O , 19 to 25 and Li O, 3.2 to 5.0. This glass pane combines the advantages of the strength of tempered glass at low temperature with the stability and long-term resistance to thermal stress of glass-ceramic material at high temperature. The fire-resistant glazing can also include at least one other glass pane made of a conventional glass and at least one plastic layer of PVB film.

The invention is directed to a method of producing a chemically pretensioned glass body. In the method, a glass body is provided having a composition in percent by weight on oxide basis: SiO.sub.2 70-85; B.sub.2 O.sub.3 8-15; Na.sub.2 O 1-5; K.sub.2 O 1-&lt;5; Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 1-5; MgO 0-3; SrO+BaO 0-2; CaO 0-3; ZnO 0-3; with CaO+ZnO 2-6; and, ZrO.sub.2 0-3.5. The glass body is placed in an ion exchange salt bath containing at least 90% by weight of potassium salts. The salt bath is maintained at a temperature below the transformation point Tg of the glass defined by the glass composition for a duration of at least 2.0 hr causing potassium ions from the salt bath to migrate into the surface region of the glass body to thereby produce the chemically pretensioned glass body.
