An electrically heatable glow plug for an internal combustion engine includes a corrosion-resistant metal jacket, a compressed powder filling contained therein, and an electrically conducting coil embedded in the filling. To increase the lifetime of the heating coil, a getter material for binding the oxygen contained in the compressed powder filling is provided. The getter material can be distributed in the form of electrically nonconducting particles in the compressed powder filling. The getter material can also be applied as a coating to the coil or to the inner surface of the metal jacket.

The invention relates to a process and apparatus for heating the intake air in internal-combustion engines by means of a flame starting system with at least one glow plug. The apparatus is controlled in such a manner that the glow plug is continuously preheated during a first time period and is operated in pulses in a following second time period and the glow plug is switched off after a safety time has elapsed. The glow plug is preheated after it has been switched off, taking into account the instantaneous glow plug temperature during the cooling and the voltage available in such a manner that the temperature required for a repeat start is reached within a narrow tolerance band. In the case of a repeat starting operation taking place after the safety time has elapsed, the renewed preheating time for the glow plug is specified in accordance with a value determined from the glow plug temperature and the available voltage, the instantaneous glow plug temperature being determined from the cooling time of the glow plug after it has been switched off.

A flame-type heater plug for an internal combustion engine includes a plug housing having a proportioning insert for the fuel supply, a heater bar secured at one end in the plug housing with a free end extending outwardly of the plug housing, and an evaporation tube extending along a substantial length of the plug housing from the proportioning insert and surrounding the heating bar to form an annular interspace therebetween. The free end of the heater bar extends from the evaporator tube and is surrounded by a flame tube including passage orifices for passage of intake air into the interior of the flame tube. A helical swirl channel on the outer surface of the heating bar in the plug housing forms a fuel connection between the proportioning insert and the evaporator tube opening into the annular interspace. The passage orifices may be provided with deflectors to prevent direct contact of the heating bar by the air flowing therethrough.

A process and device for heating the intake air in internal-combustion engines by means of a flame starting system is disclosed which contains at least one heater plug and has a control unit which supplies the heater plug with voltage for a specific preheating time. To provide a process, by means of which the preheating temperature of the heater plug necessary for starting is safely reached independently of changing boundary conditions, it is proposed to carry out the following cyclically repeating steps: detection of the voltage available at the output of the control unit, determination of a preheating time, associated with this voltage value, for the heater plug, determination of a step value from the division of a predetermined standard value for the preheating time by the value determined for the preheating time, summing of the individual step values in a memory erased at the commencement of the process, and comparison of the memory content with predetermined standard value and termination of the preheating when the standard value is reached, or return to process step (a) as long as the standard value is not reached.

The invention relates to a flame-type heater plug for an air-compression fuel-injection internal-combustion engine, especially a direct-injection and superchargable internal-combustion engine. The heater plug includes a heater tube arranged in the course of a plug housing and protective tube and has an integrated first control coil at a level of passage orifices in the protective tube, heating coil and a second control coil arranged outside the protective tube at a side of the heating coil opposite the first control coil. A heater-tube portion which projects from the protective tube and is located in the flow path of the intake air in the suction pipe of the internal-combustion engine is provided in which the second control coil is arranged for further influencing the power of the heating oil.

A device for heating the glow plugs of internal combustion engines, particularly in flame starting systems, in which there is provided a retriggerable monostable time function element which is triggered if a control voltage exceeds a specific value, and a continuous and subsequently a pulsatory current being supplied until the end of the stationary time of the retriggerable monostable time function element of the glow plug, there being provided a temperature switch which switches on below a specific first engine temperature value and switches off above a specific second engine temperature value and through which the operating voltage is applied to the device. In a compressed air charged combustion engine, in order to improve the atomization and ignition of the injected fuel from an injection nozzle, a glow plug which extends out of its glow plug housing with a cylindrically formed heating rod is provided with an irregular outer surface in the region which is impinged by the stream of fuel. The heating rod exhibits a cylindrical form and is provided with ring grooves to form the irregular surface area. Moreover the fuel stream meets at a sharp angle onto the heating rod.

A heating arrangement for preheating combustion air flowing through an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, the heating arrangement including a pot-shaped housing forming a combustion chamber into which an ignition device and a fuel injection nozzle project. A shut off valve controls an inflow of fuel and a shield sheet serves to shield the combustion flame. The pot-shaped housing is located in a flow path of the combustion air and is covered on its open side by a holder. The holder is fastened to the intake manifold and supports the ignition device, fuel injection nozzle, and shut off valve. The housing includes openings in an upstream wall portion from which the shield sheet projects into the housing in a vicinity of the opening in such a way that the shield sheet separates the combustion chamber from the fuel injection nozzle chamber.

An installation for preheating the combustion air for the multi-fuel operation of air-compressing and auto-igniting injection-type internal combustion engines with poorly ignitable fuels, for example, gasoline, during idling and partial loads, which essentially consists of an injection nozzle for fuel and of a spark plug arranged in the suction pipe. The spark plug and injection nozzle are thereby combined into a structural unit as an insert body which includes a cover structure partially covering the spark plug and the injection nozzle while a protective plate member is provided in the path of the combustion air within the suction pipe for shielding the flame.
