The invention relates to reducing harmonic signals in FT-ICR spectra. Since harmonic signals in quadrupolar 2&#x3c9;-detection can be more abundant for the same ion motion in the ICR cell as compared to harmonic signals in classical dipolar 1&#x3c9;-detection, they could hitherto not be reduced to satisfactory levels by any known method, such as gated deflection during ion introduction into, and correcting for an offset electric field axis in the ICR cell. The present disclosure foresees, in addition to other methods carried out for improving the measurement conditions as the case may be, performing the quadrupolar 2&#x3c9;-detection at least twice, where the phase of the ion excitation radio frequency is turned by 180&#xb0; in the second measurement. From the sum transient, a Fourier-transformed spectrum is derived. As a result, the broad band spectra of complex substance mixtures like crude oil become cleaner, and misinterpretations of false (harmonic) peaks are minimized.

Suppressing harmonic signals in ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

The invention relates to a method and a device for introducing ions into an ICR cell of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers, in particular with a reduced the magnetron orbit. The invention is based on applying at least one gated DC voltage to a mantle electrode of the ICR cell prior to the excitation of the cyclotron motion such that injected ions are deflected inside the ICR cell in at least one radial direction.

Introduction of ions into ion cyclotron resonance cells

Fine structures of isotopic peak clusters of substances are determined using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry, e.g, FT-ICR mass spectrometry. Resolved individual peaks in the fine structure of the non-monoisotopic peak clusters of organic substances usually contain the additional elemental isotopesC,N,O,O,H,S,S, and combinations thereof. In each of a series of experiments, one of the non-monoisotopic peak clusters is isolated and the corresponding fine structure spectrum acquired. Abundances of the resolved fine structure peaks and their positions on the mass scale are recorded and, after measuring some or all of the isotopic peaks, the atomic composition of the measured substance is calculated. By excluding the monoisotopic peak and isolating only one isotopic peak cluster at a time, the number of ions in the FT-ICR cell is kept low, which avoids resolving power losses due to space charge effects and ion-ion interaction phenomena.

Determination of elemental composition of substances from ultrahigh-resolved isotopic fine structure mass spectra

The invention relates to a method and a device for optimization of electric fields in measurement cells of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers. The invention is based on the rationale that asymmetric electric fields with uniformly or non-uniformly perturbed field axes can appear in ion cyclotron resonance cells and therefore the axis of the magnetron orbit can become radially displaced. Shifted magnetron orbits negatively affect the cyclotron excitation, deteriorate the FT-ICR signal, increase the intensity of an even-numbered harmonics peak, lead to stronger side bands of the FT-ICR signal, and in extreme cases, cause loss of ions. The present invention helps in probing the shift of the magnetron motion, detecting parameters indicative of the offset of the electric field axis and/or correcting it by trimming it back to the geometric axis of the cell.

Correction of asymmetric electric fields in ion cyclotron resonance cells

The compensation potentials on the compensation electrodes of an ICR measuring cell are sequentially adjusted so that an ICR measurement with the longest possible usable image current transient is produced. Then, subsequent ICR measurements are made using the ICR cell with the optimally adjusted compensation potentials. Depending on the kind of ion mixture involved, measurements with image current transients from 10 to more than 20 seconds long can be performed, from which mass spectra with a maximum mass resolution without peak coalescence can be obtained.
