A method for producing a printed product in which a complete content of the printed product is printed sequentially in series on one or both sides along a paper web having a width based on a multiple of a width of a finished printed product, including cutting the paper web in a direction crosswise to a longitudinal direction of the paper web to produce a cut-off section having a length based on a multiple of a length of the finished printed product, folding the cut-off section at least once in the crosswise direction in a location based on the length of the finished product, and cutting one of the folded cut-off section subsequent to the folding or the paper web prior to the crosswise cutting, to form a plurality of partial webs each having a width based on the width of the finished printed product.

Method for producing a printed product

In a method for at least partially cycle-dependent manufacturing of bound printed products by adhesive binding printed sheets in a spine area of an book block or by stitching with staples folded edges of printed sheets collected astraddle, a sequentially double-sided digitally printed paper web or individual sheets are transversely cut to from the printed sheets. The printed sheets are then transversely folded and subsequently supplied either to an adhesive binding station or to a saddle-shaped conveying support for stitching with staples.

A method and an apparatus for optimizing a production output of a processing device for processing flat articles, the processing device including at least one processing arrangement for receiving and processing the flat articles and which has function parameters controllable through actuators. Actual values of the function parameters are detected. Deviations of the actual values of the function parameters from set values are thereafter evaluated according to an empirically determined algorithm. A correction value for at least one of the actuators is calculated based on results of the above evaluation, and the actuator is operated based on the correction value for controlling the function parameters.

The thickness of successive sheets which are delivered by the feeders of a gathering machine to a collating conveyor are monitored and a computer which is associated with each feeder calculates the extent of deviation of the monitored thickness from an acceptable value. Signals which are generated by the computers in the event of excessive deviation are used to arrest the motor of the gathering machine and/or to expel the respective groups of sheets from the collating conveyor. Each computer is caused to calculate a reference value on the basis of monitored thicknesses of n successively delivered sheets whose thicknesses are within the acceptable range.

Method of and machine for gathering paper sheets and the like

A web transporting apparatus wherein the web is trained over the external surface of a radially expandible elastic shell which is connected with two end walls to form a roll and to define an internal compartment which is filled with a pressurized hydraulic fluid. The pressure of hydraulic fluid is regulated in dependency upon the thickness of the web which is being transported so that the neutral zone of the web is invariably located at the same distance from the axis of the roll. The pressure of fluid in the compartmnt is regulatable by a hydropneumatic transducer wherein a hydraulic cylinder and piston unit admits pressurized hydraulic fluid into the compartment and the pressure of fluid in the hydraulic cylinder and piston unit is regulated by a pneumatic cylinder and piston unit which receives pressurized gaseous fluid by way of an adjusting valve. Regulation of the outer diameter of the shell compensates for variations in the thickness of the transported web. The material of the shell is selected in such a way that it is capable of undergoing a purely elastic deformation within a desired range which depends upon the range of thicknesses of webs which are to be transported in the apparatus.

Web transporting apparatus

An apparatus for counting the sheets of a stream of partly overlapping sheets wherein the leaders of the next-following sheets normally rest on the trailing ends of the preceding sheets has a transporting unit which defines a path having two mutually inclined portions with the second portion sloping downwardly at an angle of 15 to 90 degrees relative to the first portion so that the leaders of successive sheets are lifted off the trailing ends of the respective preceding sheets. A photocell generates signals on detection of successive leaders while the leaders are on their way from the first into the second portion of the path, i.e., while the leaders are separated from the trailing ends of the preceding sheets, and such signals are transmitted to a counter which regulates the conversion of sheets into a series of stacks containing preselected numbers of superimposed sheets. The photocell is installed substantially midway between the longitudinal marginal portions of the stream. The sheets which travel past the photocell are subjected to the deforming action of an endless belt or chain which causes the upper sides of the sheets to assume a concave shape with the deepmost portion of each sheet extending in parallelism with the direction of transport of the stream.

Apparatus for counting the sheets in a stream of partly overlapping

Successive sections of a long stream of partially overlapping paper sheets are transferred onto the upper side of a relatively wide flexible elastic band which is indexed stepwise so that it is gradually withdrawn from a first reel and wound onto a second reel. Each section has two or more partially overlapping sheets, and successive sections can be deposited on the band in such a way that they partially overlap one another, i.e., that the band supports and confines between its windings a scalloped stream consisting of partially overlapping sections of partially overlapping sheets. In order to remove the stored sheets, the conveyor which is used to transfer sections of the scalloped stream onto the band is used to remove successive sections from the band while the latter is driven stepwise to be withdrawn from the second reel and wound back onto the first reel. The thus removed sections are deposited onto the upper reach of a receiving conveyor, either by individually depositing successive sheets of a section or by simultaneously depositing the sheets of a complete section. The sheets on the receiving conveyor can form a continuous scalloped stream or a series of discrete sections of an interrupted scalloped stream.
