Adhesive compositions providing high bond strength, long shelf life, desirable flow characteristics and end use versatility are prepared by mixing a copolymer of olefinic monomers including maleic anhydride and/or derivatives thereof, plasticizer and at least one monofunctional compound which reacts with the copolymer to render it soluble in the resulting mixture and substantially soluble in the plasticizer. Water based, hot melt and pressure sensitive embodiments of such compositions are included.

Flame resistant articles suitable for filtering solids and liquids from gases comprising a solid filter media, e.g., fiberglass, coated with flame resistant compositions containing liquid aromatic phosphate or polycarboxylate esters and a particulate inorganic phosphate.

Filter media coated with flame resistant compositions

Foamed polyblends comprising a filled styrene-butadiene rubber are rendered attractively flame-resistant (e.g. for use as carpet underlay) without loss of 'green strength' needed during processing (e.g. in a Banbury mixer) by blending therewith about 10-50 parts per hundred, based on the rubber, of a pre-fused vinyl chloride polymer plastisol.

Foam rubber polyblend

Compositions comprising normally liquid aromatic phosphate or polycarboxylate and finely divided inorganic (e.g. ammonium) phosphate are highly flame resistant. When sprayed on solid filter media (e.g. fiberglass) to enhance gas filtration, the resulting filter system has excellent flame resistance.

Flame resistant phosphate compositions

Viscosity index modifiers are added to oil-extended, flame-retarded rubber to increase the flash point of the extending oil and enhance the effects of the flame retardant and thereby lower the flammability of the rubber composition. The modifiers have an aliphatic non-polar backbone containing pendant carboxyl groups.
