A free radical curable liquid for inkjet printing of food packaging materials includes no initiator or otherwise one or more initiators selected from the group consisting of non-polymeric di- or multifunctional initiators, oligomeric initiators, polymeric initiators, and polymerizable initiators; wherein the polymerizable composition of the liquid consists of: a) 25-100 wt % of one or more polymerizable compounds A having at least one acrylate group G1 and at least one second ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable functional group G2 different from the group G1; b) 0-55 wt % of one or more polymerizable compounds B selected from the group consisting of monofunctional acrylates and difunctional acrylates; and c) 0-55 wt % of one or more polymerizable compounds C selected from the group consisting of trifunctional acrylates, tetrafunctional acrylates, pentafunctional acrylates and hexafunctional acrylates.

Curable liquids and inks for toys and food packaging applications

A free radical curable liquid for inkjet printing of food packaging materials includes no initiator or otherwise one or more initiators selected from the group consisting of non-polymeric di- or multifunctional initiators, oligomeric initiators, polymeric initiators, and polymerizable initiators; and a polymerizable composition of the liquid consists essentially of: a) 25-100 wt % of one or more polymerizable compounds A having at least one acrylate group G1 and at least one second ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable functional group G2 selected from the group consisting of a vinlyether group, an allylether group, and a allylester group; b) 0-55 wt % of one or more polymerizable compounds B selected from the group consisting of monofunctional acrylates and difunctional acrylates; and c) 0-55 wt % of one or more polymerizable compounds C selected from the group consisting of trifunctional acrylates, tetrafunctional acrylates, pentafunctional acrylates and hexafunctional acrylates. If the weight percentage of compounds B&#x3e;24 wt %, then the weight percentage of compounds C&#x3e;1 wt %, and all weight percentages of A, B, and C are based upon the total weight of the polymerizable composition. At least one polymerizable compound B or C is present in the polymerizable composition if the free radical curable liquid contains no initiator.

At least one polymerizable compound B or C is present in the polymerizable composition if the free radical curable liquid contains no initiator. The polymerizable compound A has a copolymerization ratio of0.002&#x3c;2/1&#x3c;0.200with r1 and r2 representing the copolymerization parameters of methyl-G1 respectively methyl-G2 determined according to the method of Kelen-Tudos.

A polymerizable Norrish Type II photoinitiator according to Formula (I): Radiation curable compositions and inkjet inks containing the polymerizable Norrish Type II photoinitiator of Formula (I) exhibit improved compatibility with and solubility in radiation curable compositions and inkjet inks, and exhibit low extractable amounts of the photoinitiator and its residues after curing.

Radiation curable compositions

A polymerizable Norrish Type II photoinitiators includes an optionally substituted benzophenone group or an optionally substituted thioxanthone group exhibiting improved compatibility with and solubility in radiation curable compositions. Radiation curable compositions and inkjet inks can contain these polymerizable Norrish Type II photoinitiators, exhibiting low extractable amounts of the photoinitiators and their residues after curing.

Polymerizable photoinitiators and radiation curable compositions

A polymerizable photoinitiator is represented by Formula (I): wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independently selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen, an optionally substituted alkyl group and an optionally substituted aryl group or R1 and R3 represent the necessary atoms to form a five to eight membered ring; p, w, y and z are all integers with y representing a value 1 to 6; p representing the sum of w and z; p representing a value of 1 to 6; w=1 to (p&#x2212;z) and z=0 to (p&#x2212;w); L represents an optionally substituted (p+y)-valent linking group comprising 1 to 14 carbon atoms; A represents a radically polymerizable group selected from the group consisting of an acrylate group, a methacrylate group, a styrene group, an acryl amide group, a methacryl amide group, a maleate group, a fumarate group, an itaconate group, a vinyl ether group, an allyl ether group, an allyl ester group and a vinyl ester group; and X represents a photoinitiating moiety including at least one group capable of initiating a free radical polymerization reaction upon exposure to actinic radiation.

An inkjet printing method includes the steps of a) providing a first radiation curable composition curable by free radical polymerization or cationic polymerization; b) applying a layer of the first radiation curable composition on a substrate; c) curing the layer; d) jetting on the cured layer a second composition curable by a different polymerization than the first composition but selected from the group consisting of free radical polymerization and cationic polymerization; and e) curing the jetted second composition by a different polymerization than the first composition. The first composition includes a cationically polymerizable compound having at least one (meth)acrylate group present in the first curable composition in an amount of at least 25 wt % based upon the total weight of the first curable composition. An inkjet ink set may be used in the above inkjet printing method.

Radiation curable inkjet printing methods

A liquid radiation curable composition for inkjet printing includes a photoinitiating system consisting of one or more diffusion hindered photoinitiators selected from the group consisting of non-polymeric di- or multifunctional initiators, oligomeric or polymeric initiators, and polymerizable initiators, and one or more polymerizable co-initiators, wherein at least one of the polymerizable co-initiators is a polymerizable aromatic tertiary amine. Inkjet inks, an inkjet printing process, and packaging materials may include the liquid radiation curable composition.

Radiation curable compositions for food applications

A radiation curable composition comprising a curable compound, a photo-initiator and a co-initiator characterized in that said co-initiator is represented by Formula I, wherein MA is the residue of a mono- or oligofunctional Michael acceptor; L is a divalent linking group positioning the two tertiary amines in a 1-3 to 1-10 position, with the proviso that both amines are aliphatic; R1, R2 and R3 independently represent an optionally substituted alkyl group, an optionally substituted alkenyl group , an optionally substituted alkynyl group or an optionally substituted (hetero) alkaryl group; any two of R1, R2 and R3 may represent the necessary atoms to form a ring; any two of R1, R2 and R3 may represent the necessary atoms to form a ring with any of the atoms of the linking group L; n is an integer ranging from 1 to 6.

Amine co-initiators for radiation curable compositions

A curable pigment inkjet ink set includes a cyan inkjet ink, a yellow inkjet ink, and a magenta inkjet ink, wherein the yellow inkjet ink having ABS(Y)momo &#x3c;5 and ABS(Y)&#x3e;60 includes one or more yellow pigments; the cyan inkjet ink includes one or more &#x3b2;-copper phthalocyanine pigments; and the magenta inkjet ink contains a mixed crystal including a first quinachdone and a second quinacridone in a ratio of the first quinacridone over the second quinacridone such that ABS(M)&#x3e;20 and ABS(M)&#x3e;60. ABS(Y)represents the absorbance of the yellow inkjet ink between 500 and 530 nm; ABS(M)represents the absorbance of the magenta inkjet ink between 500 and 530 nm; ABS(Y)represents the absorbance ot the yellow inkjet ink between 400 and 500 nm; and ABS(M)represents the absorbance of the magenta inkjet ink between 500 and 600 nm.

Methods for preparing curable pigment inkjet ink sets

A radiation curable composition comprising a curable compound, a photo-initiator and a co-initiator, characterized in that said co-initiator is a oligomer or polymer having a repeating unit, said repeating unit comprising at least two tertiary amines, and said polymer being prepared by the polycondensation of di- or oligofunctional Michael acceptors with mono- or oligofunctional aliphatic primary amines or with di- or oligofunctional aliphatic secondary amines or with a mixture thereof.

A radiation-curable ink-jet black ink is provided which includes a black pigment, at least one colour pigment and at least one radiation-curable compound. An ink-jet ink set which includes the radiation-curable ink-jet black ink and a process for printing with such an ink-jet ink set are also disclosed. Image quality defects of noticeable chromatic variation in adjacent print patches of bi-directional printing are eliminated and reduced ink consumption is observed.
