This disclosure describes techniques for performing communications between devices using various aspects of Ethernet standards. As further described herein, a protocol is disclosed that may be used for communications between devices, where the communications take place over a physical connection complying with Ethernet standards. Such a protocol may enable reliable and in-order delivery of frames between devices, while following Ethernet physical layer rules, Ethernet symbol encoding, Ethernet lane alignment, and/or Ethernet frame formats.

Reliable communications using a point to point protocol

Techniques for detecting path failures and reducing packet loss as a result of such failures are described for use within a data center or other environment. For example, a source and/or destination access node may create and/or maintain information about health and/or connectivity for a plurality of ports or paths between the source and destination device and core switches. The source access node may spray packets over a number of paths between the source access node and the destination access node. The source access node may use the information about connectivity for the paths between the source or destination access nodes and the core switches to limit the paths over which packets are sprayed. The source access node may spray packets over paths between the source access node and the destination access node that are identified as healthy, while avoiding paths that have been identified as failed.

Resilient network communication using selective multipath packet flow spraying

The disclosure describes example techniques for determining a data rate at which destination blocks are to receive data unit on a communication mesh. The destination block may determine the data rate at which the destination block is to receive data unit and broadcast information indicative of the data rate on a congestion mesh. The congestion mesh may be configured to route the broadcasted information in a manner that accounts for the relative positions of the circuit blocks in the congestion mesh.

This disclosure describes techniques that include associating a timestamp with a network packet, and carrying the timestamp or otherwise associating the timestamp with the network packet during some or all processing by the system described herein. In one example, this disclosure describes a method that includes receiving, at an ingress port of a device, an initial portion of a network packet; storing, by the device, timestamp information associated with receiving the initial portion of the packet; and determining, by the device, whether to transmit information derived from the initial portion of the network packet.

In one example, this disclosure describes a method that includes presenting query data to one or more ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM) devices, wherein the query data includes state data and key data; receiving, from the TCAM devices, information about a matching address identified by the TCAM devices; accessing, based on the information about the matching address, information in one or more storage devices; performing, based on the information in the one or more storage devices, at least one operation on data included within the one or more storage devices to generate processed data; outputting the processed data; determining, based on the information in the one or more storage devices, new state data and a new key value; and presenting new query data to the TCAM devices.

In some examples, a switching system includes a plurality of fabric endpoints and a multi-stage switching fabric. A fabric endpoint of the system is configured to receive, via the switch fabric, a plurality of cell streams, wherein each cell of a cell stream of the plurality of cell stream is associated with a sequence number that defines a correct ordering of cells of the cell stream; assign subsequences of each cell stream of the plurality of cell streams to respective reorder engines of the fabric endpoint; concurrently reorder the assigned respective subsequences to produce respective ordered subsequences for the subsequences, wherein the ordered subsequences are ordered according to the correct ordering of the corresponding cell stream; interleave the respective ordered subsequences for each cell stream to produce reordered cell streams each having correctly ordered cells; and process each reordered cell stream according to the corresponding correct ordering of cells.
