A system, wearable device, and method include a light emitter configured to emit light at a first wavelength of between approximately 900 and 1000 nanometers and at a second wavelength of approximately 1350 nanometers, a first light detector spaced at a first distance from the light emitter, and a second light detector spaced at a second distance from the light emitter, the second distance approximately twice the first distance. At least one of hydration and glycogen of muscle tissue is determinable based on a relationship between backscatter light from the muscle tissue as detected by the second light detector and backscatter light from non-muscle tissue as detected by the first light detector.

Near-infrared spectroscopy for sensing glycogen in muscle tissue

A near infrared spectrometer and method for wavelength and path length correction are disclosed. The spectrometer includes a number of photodiodes that transmit broadband near infrared measurement light into the tissue and at least one broadband detector which measures the light signal transmitted through the tissue. A processor estimates chromophore concentrations through a comparison of measured light attenuation and modeled light attenuation. The light attenuation model utilizes a light path length distribution derived from a Monte Carlo model and accounts for the spectral shape of the light source as a function of temperature.

An environmental conditioning assembly for use in mechanical testing at scales of microns or less. The assembly includes an enclosure housing with an environmental cavity therein. A sample stage is positioned within the environmental cavity and includes an option sample heater. The enclosure housing includes a cavity perimeter clustered around the sample stage, and the enclosure housing isolates the environmental cavity and the sample stage from an environment exterior to the enclosure housing. In an example, an expansion and contraction linkage maintains a sample on the sample stage at a static elevation according to heating or cooling fluctuations within the environmental cavity. A testing instrument access port extends through the enclosure housing into the environmental cavity.

Environmental conditioning assembly for use in mechanical testing at micron or nano-scales

A heating assembly configured for use in mechanical testing at a scale of microns or less. The heating assembly includes a probe tip assembly configured for coupling with a transducer of the mechanical testing system. The probe tip assembly includes a probe tip heater system having a heating element, a probe tip coupled with the probe tip heater system, and a heater socket assembly. The heater socket assembly, in one example, includes a yoke and a heater interface that form a socket within the heater socket assembly. The probe tip heater system, coupled with the probe tip, is slidably received and clamped within the socket.

Probe tip heating assembly

An automated testing system includes systems and methods to facilitate inline production testing of samples at a micro (multiple microns) or less scale with a mechanical testing instrument. In an example, the system includes a probe changing assembly for coupling and decoupling a probe of the instrument. The probe changing assembly includes a probe change unit configured to grasp one of a plurality of probes in a probe magazine and couple one of the probes with an instrument probe receptacle. An actuator is coupled with the probe change unit, and the actuator is configured to move and align the probe change unit with the probe magazine and the instrument probe receptacle. In another example, the automated testing system includes a multiple degree of freedom stage for aligning a sample testing location with the instrument. The stage includes a sample stage and a stage actuator assembly including translational and rotational actuators.

Nanomechanical testing system

Systems and methods are described for measuring a tissue parameter such as % StO2 in a tissue sample. One such method includes receiving first and second scattered light intensity signals at unique locations on a selected region of tissue from light injected into the region of tissue from a light source to identify a measured light attenuation data value. An electronic data store can be accessed that includes simulated light attenuation data determined from a mathematical tissue model at discrete points over a range of two or more tissue parameters, where the simulated light attenuation data are a function of one or more temperature-dependent light source spectra. The tissue parameter in the tissue sample can be determined by selecting a closest match between the measured light attenuation data and the simulated light attenuation data. An electronic signal representative of the determined tissue parameter can be sent to an output register.

Systems and methods for measuring oxygenation

Devices, systems, and methods for measuring tissue oxygen saturation (StO) within the body are disclosed. A patient interface for use with a tissue measurement instrument can include a spring clip having a first arm and a second arm, a spring configured to bias the first and second arms together, and a means for optically connecting the patient interface to the tissue measurement instrument. The patient interface can be used in conjunction with an optical sourcing and receiving unit of a monitor for measuring tissue oxygen saturation at a measurement site on the patient. A testing interface on an external portion of the instrument housing and a testing module can be used to perform tests on the instrument.

Devices, systems, and methods for measuring tissue oxygen saturation are disclosed. An illustrative spectrometer for interfacing an optical sensor with a display unit includes a number of measurement radiation sources, a number of radiation source fibers each optically coupled to one of the measurement radiation sources, a reflected radiation fiber optically coupled to the optical sensor, a measurement radiation output fiber including an image fiber, and a radiation mixing bar intermediate the radiation source fibers and the measurement radiation output fiber.

Apparatus and method for simultaneously adjusting the gram load and radius geometry height of a head suspension by scanning a spring region of the head suspension with a laser beam. The incremental height difference between left and right legs of a spring region of the suspension may also be concurrently corrected. Apparatus and method for measuring the radius geometry height are provided by two or more non-contacting optical probes. A nitrogen atmosphere may be maintained in the region scanned.

Scanning beam suspension adjustment

A spectrophotometric instrument is comprised of a processor, a probe having a tissue engaging surface with an aperture therethrough and a light source producing measurement light signals and optically coupled to the probe via a first optical path. A partially reflective first reflecting member is located in the probe and has a generally elliptical profile positioned to reflect a first portion of the measurement light signals to the tissue aperture and to transmit a second portion of the measurement light signals through the first reflecting member. A second reflecting member is located in the probe and has a generally elliptical profile positioned to reflect the measurement light signals transmitted through the first reflecting member. A second optical path has a distal end positioned to receive the measurement light signals reflected off of the second reflecting member and a proximal end coupled to the processor. A third optical path has a distal end positioned in the probe to receive light signals transmitted through the tissue sample and a proximal end coupled to the processor.

Method and apparatus for monitoring output signal instability in a light source

An optical connector comprises a first block having a channel for accommodating a first set of optical cables and a second block having a channel for accommodating a second set of optical cables. Each block has three protrusions, each adapted to be engaged to a respective one of the three protrusions from the other block in an end-to-end fashion and having a channel for accommodating one of the optical cables. The connector further comprises a spring biasing the two blocks to maintain the end-to-end engagement a longitudinal direction between the protrusions three spacers. The connector also includes limiter disk having three slots arranged in a Y-pattern, each slot width-wise closely fitting an opposing pair of the protrusions. The limiter disk thus constrains the relative shifting or rotation between the two blocks in any direction transverse to the longitudinal direction. The connector further includes a fastener attached to the two blocks for securing the two blocks together. A kinematic support is thus provided for stable optical connection across an optical connector.
