An electrochemical cell and electrode assembly in which an alkali metal anode and a cathode assembly are wound together in a unidirectional winding having substantially straight sides such that the winding will fit into a prismatic cell. The anode and cathode are arranged in the winding to provide for even utilization of reactive material during cell discharge by placing cathode and anode material in close proximity throughout the electrode assembly in the proportions in which they are utilized. The winding also contributes to even utilization of reactive material by employing multiple tabs on the cathode assembly to ensure that cathode material is evenly utilized throughout the electrode assembly during cell discharge and also so that connections to the tabs are readily made.

Method for making a high reliability electrochemical cell and electrode

An electrochemical cell and electrode assembly in which an alkali metal anode and a cathode assembly are wound together in a unidirectional winding. The anode includes an elongated strip of alkali metal which is combined with a separator material by pressing the separator material into the alkali metal under high pressure. The cathode assembly includes a cathode current collector and a cathode material bonded to the current collector at a uniform density of reactive material. The pressing of separator material into the anode can provide improved energy density in the cell.

Electrode assembly and method

Electrode construction and assembly for energy storage devices such as capacitors and batteries wherein the electrodes, both anode and cathode, are of one piece construction folded and interleaved to provide an electrode assembly of improved operation.

Energy storage device

A button type metal/air cell with a height increasing cap thereon to provide for multiple-cell batteries of varying heights. The cap is placed adjacent the cathode inlet of the cell and is accordingly apertured and preferably also contains a porous absorbent material for leakage prevention but which does not significantly affect air inflow rate. Cells, with protective height adjusting caps, are assembled into multi-cell batteries of varying heights with reduced incidence of leakage.

Metal/air cell

The disclosure describes a battery assembly which comprises several gas depolarizable electrochemical cells, e.g., metal/air cells, stacked electrically in series along a first dimension. Each cell has first and second electrodes of opposite polarities. The battery assembly also comprises a housing for containing the stack of cells. The housing includes a structure for ventilating the interior of the housing and further includes first and second opposite end walls which lie perpendicular to the first dimension. The stack of cells is arranged within the housing with the first electrode of the initial cell of the stack facing the first wall and the second electrode of the final cell of the stack facing the second wall. The battery assembly further includes first and second electrically conductive connectors disposed within the housing. The first connector has a first end electrically coupled to the first electrode of the initial cell and a second end disposed adjacent the first wall. The second connector has a first end electrically coupled to the second electrode of the final cell and a second end also disposed adjacent the first wall. The battery assembly further comprises first and second terminals which are electrically coupled to the first and second connectors, respectively, and extend through the first wall to the exterior of the housing.

Battery assembly

The present invention relates to a portable electrical power source comprising housing means adapted to fit within a cell cavity of a battery-powered device, said housing means having positive and negative electrical contact means adapted to form electrical connection with corresponding positive and negative contact means of said device; a plurality of button cells disposed within said housing means, at least one of said button cells being electrically connected to said contact means and at least 50 percent of said button cells being insulated from any electrical connection to said contact means.

Multi-cell power supply

A storage and merchandising display package for button cells in which the cells are inserted in apertures and adhesively held against a backing material which, in the preferred embodiment, for Zinc-Air cells, has preferential barrier properties to extend the shelf-life of the cells. The package includes an openable cover which surrounds the cells to prevent accidental shorting or physical dislodgment thereof and which may also carry instructions as well as product or company identifying indicia thereon to enhance the sales appeal of the package and also serve as a product locator. The package may also be formed of absorbent material or material impregnated with an electrolyte neutralizing agent to prevent electrolyte leaking from the cells from damaging adjacent packages.

Button cell storage and merchandising package

An electrode assembly for an air depolarized cell in which an electrical conducting tab is mechanically attached to the electrode assembly to produce a low resistance electrical connection. The tab includes a crown which has sharp tines thereon for piercing the electrode assembly which generally comprises a separator, a current collecting screen, an electrode material and an outer hydrophobic member. The projections on the conducting tab are wide enough to insure that each of the tines will engage a section of current collecting screens.
