A syringe and needle hub for a syringe has distal patient-facing side having a surface for contact with the subject's skin during injection. The contact surface is formed by a distal face of a post supporting a cannula and an outer collar surrounding the post. The axial distance between the distal face of the post and the distal face of the collar provided a contact surface with a radius of curvature to control the desired injection. The syringe barrel can have finger flanges extending outwardly where the flanges have a tactile member such as a dimple projecting from a proximal face of the flange and recess in a distal face of the flange.

A retracting needle assembly for use with a syringe barrel having a distally-facing annular sealing surface includes an outer hub having a conduit therethrough, a proximally facing annular sealing surface and means for connecting the outer hub to the syringe barrel. An inner hub having a passageway therethrough is provided. The inner hub includes a distally extending stem and a proximal flange for releasably engaging the outer hub. A needle having a sharp distal end and a proximal end is mounted in the passageway of the inner hub so that the sharp distal end projects distally outwardly. An elongate spring is disposed about the stem of the inner hub and is deflected to provide a bias between the inner hub and the outer hub. A hollow sleeve sized to fit within the conduit of the outer hub over the spring is provided. The sleeve has a sharp edge at its distal end for cutting through the flange to activate the retracting needle feature.

The syringe has a hollow elongate plunger with an open proximal end and a closed distal end. When a user applies a sufficient force, the hub is sufficiently moved distally in the receiver for the cutting edge of the sleeve to cut through the flange and the closed distal end of the plunger to expose the cavity for withdrawal of the needle into the syringe.

A syringe has a retractable needle and a barrel having an open proximal end and an open distal end defining a receiver with an inward shoulder. The barrel has a hollow bore, an elongate plunger with a proximal end and a distal open end with a cavity therewithin. A stopper occludes the open end of the cavity. The syringe has an elongate hub with a proximal flange. The hub is within and sized for slidable movement within the receiver at the distal end of the barrel with the flange defining a distal end of a chamber. There is a sleeve sized to fit with a clearance about the hub disposed between the shoulder and the flange when the hub is in the receiver, the sleeve having a sharpened proximal end disposed against the flange. The needle has a pointed distal end and a proximal end connected to the passageway of the hub with the pointed end of the needle extending outwardly. There is a spring disposed about the hub compressed to provide a bias between the receiver and the flange so that when a force greater than required to expel fluid from the chamber is applied, the plunger causes the cutting surface to cut through the flange and stopper and expose the cavity to allow the spring to urge the hub into the cavity in the plunger and retract the needle to a position within the syringe.

A hypodermic syringe with a selectively retractable needle includes an elongate barrel defining a receiver and a hollow bore. The syringe has a plunger with an elongate cavity open to the proximal end. The plunger is sized to fit within the bore of the barrel for a slidable movement to define a chamber for receiving and expelling fluids. The inside diameter of the cavity in the plunger is sufficient to accept telescopically at least a part of a first portion of the plunger. A second portion and the first portion are joined at an attachment to form a shoulder extending outwardly from the first portion, with the plunger being telescopically collapsible by movement of the second portion into the cavity by of sufficient distal force to frangibly disrupt the attachment. The syringe includes an elongate sleeve sized to fit over the first portion of the plunger and extend from the shoulder. The plunger includes a stopper to a form fluid tight seal with the barrel. The sleeve has a cutting surface inside of the stopper. The syringe includes a hub with a proximal flange and a passageway within the receiver. The syringe has a needle with a pointed distal end mounted in the passageway of the hub extending distally outwardly. When sufficient distal force is applied to collapse the plunger, the cutting surface of the sleeve cuts through the stopper and through the flange of the hub and releases it from the receiver to retract the needle.

The barrel has a hollow bore therethrough and the receiver includes a plurality of inwardly projecting cams distal to the shoulder. There is an elongate plunger with a proximal end and a distal end sized to fit slidably within the bore of the barrel to define a chamber. There is a hub with a flange and a stem that has a passageway therethrough extending distally into the receiver. The stem has distal recesses disposed to engage the projecting cams so that the hub is retained with the distal end of the stem in the receiver. The syringe includes a needle mounted in the passageway in the hub with the distal point projecting distally and the fluid path communicates with the chamber. There is a clip about the elongate plunger initially allowing movement of the plunger for drawing and expelling fluid. When sufficient distal force is applied to the plunger moving and rotates the hub, the clip engages the barrel permitting only proximal movement of the plunger. The syringe includes a spring disposed about the stem compressed between the flange and the inward shoulder. When sufficient distal force is applied to the flange the hub is no longer retained. The spring urges a proximal movement into the barrel as the plunger is moved proximally.

When a user applies a sufficient force, the hub is sufficiently moved distally in the receiver for the cutting edge of the sleeve to cut through the flange and the closed distal end of the plunger to expose the cavity for withdrawal of the needle into the syringe.

A retractable needle syringe includes a barrel defining a receiver. There is a plunger having an inner rod extending distally from the proximal end. The plunger includes a hollow sleeve that is disposed over and extend beyond an inner rod. The plunger includes a hollow cutter extending from the inner rod and a stopper disposed over the end of the sleeve. The plunger has a displaceable collar to prevent movement of the inner rod with respect to the sleeve, that is by distal force to the plunger by engagement with the proximal end of the barrel allowing the cutting surface to cut through the stopper. There is a hub with a stem, a proximal flange and an engagement. A clip having a proximal foot with an opening therethrough and a distal grip is disposed on the stem of the hub. The proximal foot of the clip is disposed at the distal surface of the flange and the grip at the engagement on the stem. There is a spring disposed about the stem compressed between the receiver and the clip to provide a bias, so that when sufficient force is applied to the plunger causing the cutting surface to cut through the stopper, the cutting surface then engages, cuts through the flange to engage the clip and cause the clip to release the engagement on the stem. This allows the spring to urge the hub to a position within the syringe.

A pen needle magazine dispenser for holding and dispensing a novel pen needle assembly. The pen needle magazine dispenser includes a number of threaded sleeves within cavities that interact with threads on each pen needle assembly to attach the pen needle to a special adapter on a conventional medication delivery pen. A medication cartridge for use with a medication delivery pen having a cartridge body with threads at its distal end for receiving a pen-needle. The threads are either integrally molded in the cartridge or on the outer surface of a cap used to retain a septum on the distal end of the cartridge body. The cartridge body of the medication cartridge also includes threads or a snap-ring at its proximal end for attaching the medication cartridge directly to a pen body housing of the medication delivery pen without the need for a medication cartridge holder.

The medication delivery pen includes a mechanism that prevents the removal of a cartridge unless an injector button on the medication pen is in a predefined position, a bayonet attachment and an improved clutch assembly in a dose setting mechanism that provides improved control over the torque necessary to rotate a units counter ring in the medication delivery pen using a dose setting knob.

A method and apparatus for lubricating stoppers prior to their insertion with syringe barrels is provided. A pair of lubricating wheels are provided which have opposing stopper contact surfaces. Each wheel is partially positioned within a reservoir so that, upon wheel rotation, lubricant within the reservoir is transferred to a wheel engaging the stopper contact surfaces.
