A sports monitoring system and method. One disclosed system can be used during skiing and includes a controller transceiver that can be hand held, two ski boot pressure monitor/transmitters, and earphones connectable to the controller/transceiver. The system can be used to provide, through the earphones, sound indicative of pressure applied or not applied by a skier toward a portion of a boot while skiing. The system may also include a proximity sensor mounted within one of the ski boot pressure monitor/transmitters. The system can thereby provide sound responsive to the proximity detector's detection of one boot being at or not at a distance, or within or outside of a distance range, with respect to the other boot.

The present invention may provide a surge current sensor and a surge protection system that deploys one or more surge current sensors. The surge current sensor may be placed on or near to a conduit, and it may be used for sensing the surge current conducted therein. The surge current sensor may include a current transformer and a processor. The current transformer may be used for receiving a magnetic flux generated by the surge current and transforming the received magnetic flux to a voltage. The processor may be coupled with the current transformer, such that it may be configured to generate a digital signal based on the voltage. Once the digital signal indicates that the magnitude of the surge current has exceeded a predefined threshold, the surge protection system may initiate a surge protection mechanism.

A circuit for attenuating a surge is disclosed that might include a conductor for receiving the surge, a capacitor, positioned along the conductor, for blocking the surge, and a gas tube having a first end coupled to the conductor and a second end coupled to a ground. The circuit might also include a transformer having a first wire and a second wire, the transformer being coupled to the conductor, a resistor coupled to the first and second wires of the transformer, a varistor coupled to the first wire of the transformer, and a diode coupled to the second wire of the transformer.

Apparatus for protecting electronic components and equipment and method of manufacturing the apparatus. A transient protection device capable of mounting onto a circuit board. The transient protection device includes first and second conductive paths. The first conductive path lies in a first plane and the second conductive path lies in a second plane spaced apart from the first plane. Furthermore, a dielectric material lies in a third plane disposed between the first and the second plane. A ground plane is coupled with said first conductive path to discharge an electrical surge.
