Processes for the regeneration of catalysts, such as hydrogenation catalysts, and the defouling of objects, which are contaminated with carbonaceous deposits. The catalyst or object is contacted with water, oxygen-containing gas, and at least one alkaline material maintained at a pH of at least 7.0, and at a temperature and pressure sufficient to combust at least a portion of the carbonaceous deposits. The process of the present invention enables one to remove carbonaceous deposits from catalysts or contaminated the leaching of metals from the catalysts or objects by acidic by-products of the combustion process.

Processes for regenerating catalysts contaminated with carbonaceous

A system for adding and withdrawing solids to a high pressure reactor wherein there is provided improved control of flow and concentrations of a slurry of solids in a transport oil for introducing and withdrawing solids from the reactor. In addition, there is provided for improved heating and cooling of the solids.

Prior to upgrading a viscous feed by visbreaking, at least a portion of the feed is treated to remove a heavy phase in specified amounts, whereby the severity of the visbreaking may be increased. The Shell Hot Filtration number of the visbreaking product is reduced by at least 75%, compared to visbreaking of untreated feed at some severity.

Treatment of feed for high severity visbreaking

A pump seal oil system for a reactor pump wherein seal oil is provided at a pre-determined rate of flow without changing the rate of flow in response to pressure differences between the seal oil in the pump and the reactor pressure. Seal oil is provided at a first rate when the reactor pump is in operation and at a second higher rate when the reactor pump is not in operation.

A feed is subjected to deasphalting to separately recover oil, resin and pitch. The resin fraction is upgraded to valuable product, for example, by hydrogenation or visbreaking, and heavier components from the upgrading are recycled to the deasphalting for removing pitchlike components prior to being recycled to the upgrading step.

Upgrading of high boiling hydrocarbons

In an expanded bed reactor, the expansion of the bed is automatically controlled by automatically changing the rate of speed of a recycle pump for the reactor. The bed is preferably provided with both high and low level bed detectors, and a further detector for determining abnormally high levels.

In a hydrogenation operation employing an ebullated catalytic bed, recycle is recovered from the hydrogenated product with at least 25%, by volume, of the recycle boiling above 950.degree. F. The recycle is cooled to a temperature of from 350.degree. to 600.degree. F. to separate coke precursors, prior to recycle to the hydrogenation. Higher conversion levels can be achieved by effecting recycle in such manner.
