The present invention discloses a process for devulcanizing cured rubber into devulcanized rubber that is capable of being recompounded and recured into useful rubber products, said process comprising heating the cured rubber to a temperature which is within the range of about 150&#xb0; C. to about 300&#xb0; C. under a pressure of at least about 3.4&#xd7;10Pascals in the presence of a mixture of carbon dioxide and 2-butanol.

The invention relates to expandable butyl rubber bladders for use in curing presses for hydrocarbon rubbers such as pneumatic tires. The bladders are a crosslinked butyl rubber composition comprising isobutylene repeat units and the bladder composition contains ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, alone or in combination with graphite and/or fluorinated ethylene polymers, dispersed within the bladder composition. This invention discloses a process for devulcanizing the surface of reclaimed rubber crumb into surface devulcanized reclaimed rubber crumb that is suitable for being recompounded and recurred into high performance rubber products, said process comprising the steps of (1) heating the reclaimed rubber crumb to a temperature within the range of about 150&deg; C. to about 300&deg; C. under pressure of at least about 3.4&times;10 Pascals in the presence of 2-butanol to devulcanized the surface of the rubber crumb thereby producing a slurry of the surface devulcanized reclaimed rubber crumb in the 2-butanol, wherein the reclaimed rubber crumb has a particles size which is within the range of about 325 mesh to about 20 mesh, and (2) separating the surface devulcanized reclaimed rubber crumb from 2-butanol.

A halobutyl rubber is generally used in the innerliner of pneumatic tires to retard the escape of air used to inflate the tire, thereby maintaining tire pressure. Since halobutyl rubbers, such as bromobutyl rubber, are generally the most expensive elastomers used in tires, it is desirable from a standpoint of cost reduction to reduce the level of halobutyl rubbers used in tires. The present invention relates to a technique for reducing the quantity of halobutyl rubber utilized in the innerliner of tubeless pneumatic vehicle tires. The present invention more specifically relates to a tire innerliner and pneumatic tires containing the same, which are prepared from a composition comprising, based on 100 parts by weight of rubber, a blend of (1) about 50 parts to about 90 parts of a halobutyl rubber and (2) about 10 parts to about 50 parts of a styrene-isoprene-butadiene terpolymer rubber having a first glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -110.degree. C. to about -20.degree. C. and a second glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -50.degree. C. to about 0.degree. C., wherein said styrene-isoprene-butadiene terpolymer rubber contains about 20 weight percent to about 40 weight percent bound styrene.

The present invention relates to a tire innerliner and pneumatic tires containing the same, which are prepared from a composition comprising, based on 100 parts by weight of rubber, a blend containing 30 to about 50 parts by weight of a solution polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber having a Tg ranging from -45.degree. C. to -65.degree. C. and 70 to 50 parts by weight of a halobutyl rubber.

An elastomer barrier composition comprises a melt blend of syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene, a terpolymer of ethylene, vinyl acetate and vinyl alcohol, and a compatibilizing agent. The melt blend is formed under suitable mixing and shear conditions such that the terpolymer exists as a separate domain in generally a flat or plate-like form. The elastomer barrier material can be utilized in rubber compositions such as in the innerliner of the tire.
