A polymeric dispersant having a low T.sub.g polymer component, e.g. polybutadiene, and a pendant silylated group with hydrolysable groups capable of associating with and dispersing. finely divided inorganic fillers. Curable compositions containing the polymeric dispersant can be cured into composite materials having improved resistance to stress induced by thermal cycling.

The invention relates to particulate magnesium hydroxide suitable for use as a flame retardant additive for a polymer which has a BET surface area of 13-30 m.sup.2 /g and an average particle size (D.sub.50) of 0.3-1.0 micron. The invention also relates to a process for producing a particulate magnesium hydroxide having a BET surface area of 13-30 m.sup.2 /g and an average particle size (D.sub.50) of 0.3-1.9 micron by calcining a magnesium feedstock to magnesium oxide having a BET surface area of 3-10 m.sup.2 /g; hydrating the magnesium oxide to a magnesium hydroxide hydration product in the absence of added catalyst; and milling the magnesium hydroxide hydration product. The invention further relates to a polymeric article containing particulate magnesium hydroxide according to the invention.

Particulate magnesium hydroxide

A cohesive polymer matrix comprising a matrix polymer and a coated particulate filler dispersed therein, characterized in that the matrix polymer is an emulsion rubber, and the filler is coated at least in part with a composition comprising an organic coating polymer of number average molecular weight of 4,500 to 200,000 which contains an acidic group (or a precursor thereof) and an unsaturated group, optionally linked to the matrix polymer and a process for its production.

A cohesive polymer matrix comprising a matrix polymer and a coated particulate fillter dispersed therein, characterized in that the matrix polymer is a cross-linked olefin/acrylic polymer, and the filler is coated at least in part with a composition comprising an organic coating polymer of number average molecular weight of up to 200,000, which contains an acidic group (or a precursor thereof) and an unsaturated group optionally linked to the matrix polymer and a process for its production, and precursors thereof for use in the process.

A cohesive polymer comprising a matrix a matrix polymer and a coated particulate filler dispersed therein, characterized in that the matrix polymer is an acrylic polymer, and the filler is coated at least in part with a composition comprising an organic coating polymer of number average molecular weight of up to 300,000, which contains an acidic group (or precursor thereof) and an unsaturated group optionally linked to the matrix acrylic polymer, and a process for its production, and precursors thereof for use in the process.

Filled cohesive polymer matrices and process for producing same

A cohesive polymer matrix comprising a matrix polymer and a coated particulate filler dispersed therein, characterized in that the matrix polymer is a solution rubber, and the filler is coated at least in part with a composition comprising an organic coating polymer of number average molecular weight of up to 3,000 which contains an acidic group (or a precursor thereof) and unsaturated groups optionally linked to the matrix polymer at least 25% w/w of which are vinyl groups.

The use of a material of empirical composition MgO(CO.sub.2).sub.b (H.sub.2 O).sub.c, where b is any value in the range 0.5 to 1.1 and c is any value in the range 0 to 2, and which have an amorphous content of at least 75% by weight, as a filler and/or a fire retardant for a solid or fluid matrix, a solid or fluid matrix (in particular a plastics matrix) containing such a material as dispersed particles, the materials in defined particulate morphologies, some of the materials per se and a process for their preparation.

A coated particulate filler to the surface of which there is bound an acid group-containing organic polymer which also comprises a nitrogen-containing group capable of reacting with an organic polymeric material. The acidic group may be a carboxylic acid group and the nitrogen-containing group may be an amide group or an amine group, especially a alkylamine or a polyakylamine derivative of an amine group. The organic polymeric material may contain ethylenically unsaturated groups or halogen groups, and reaction may take place during cross-linking of the organic polymeric material. Compositions comprising coated particulate filler and organic polymeric material have improved tensile modulus.

The invention relates to electric incandescent lamps having a gas fill containing halogen. The internal surface of the lamp envelope and optionally also the exposed surface of internal components of the lamp are protected from attack by halogens including fluorine by a continuous imperforate coating composed of a metal oxide resistant to halogen attack. In order to achieve the necessary degree of continuity of the coating the oxide is formed in situ from a compound of the metal deposited as a solution on the surface. The preferred oxide is alumina, the other oxides of polyvalent and transition metals, including metals of the lanthanide series may be used. The coatings are preferably formed from solutions of halides of the metals in polar organic solvents such as methanol. The invention prolongs the life of lamps provided with the protective coating and enable such resistant and possibly cheaper materials to be employed for certain lamp components.
