Heat-conductive masses of material encapsulate end turns of a stator fixed in a housing of a motor to dissipate heat from the stator through the side and one end of the housing. In one embodiment, a resilient heat-conductive pad is interposed between a front plate of the housing and a side of one of the heat-conductive masses of material facing the front plate. The pad has a thickness greater than the manufacturing tolerances associated with assembling an end of the stator at an end of the housing adjacent to the front plate. In another embodiment, the heat-conductive mass of material adjacent to the front plate extends into contact with the front plate. The contact can be assured, even without the presence of a resilient pad, by forming the heat-conductive mass between the stator and the front plate after the stator is assembled to the housing.

Apparatus and method for dissipating heat from a motor

A rotor is comprised of laminations forced on a shaft that has two staking rails, which penetrate the laminations and create two holding points. The two staking rails are positioned on the shaft at an angle to force the lamination toward the center of the shaft and force it hard against a flat on the shaft. This assembly provides for 'zero' rotational movement without additional steps in the manufacturing process. An additional feature of the assembly is that the flat on the shaft relates to flats on the rotor to which the permanent magnets are attached, and a flat on the shaft for mounting an encoder, which flats are all in the same plane. This allows the motor to be easily aligned, which is a requirement to properly phase motor rotation to motor commutation.

Laminated rotor for permanent magnet brushless motors

A brushless, linear motor is provided in which the armature coils are cast in a resin to form an armature plate. A heat sink is attached along one edge of the plate with conductive pins (e.g. aluminum pins) extending through the plate and into the heat sink. Fans, attached to the heat sink, draw air across it in order to remove heat by convection. A wireless communications link transmits commutation data and/or armature position data to a motor controller.

Brushless linear motor slider

A motor, encoder/resolver, and/or dynamic brake assembly in which the dynamic brake, when part of the assembly, is mounted on a rear cover plate of a modular housing for the auxiliary components. When a resolver or encoder is part of the assembly, the motor shaft extends only a short distance beyond the resolver/encoder housing module; far enough to be engaged by the armature of the dynamic brake if the brake is part of the assembly. In an assembly that does not use a dynamic brake, the same rear cover plate is used to close the encoder/resolver housing module.

Brushless linear motor

A two wire, brushless, d.c. motor power control system employs a rechargeable d.c. power source (e.g. a battery or a capacitor) to provide power to the commutation position sensing electronics, and commutation logic during dynamic braking and also if desired, during motor start-up after stopping or reversing direction. Current limiting is provided by sensing the two-wire motor current and using the communicating logic to modulate the turn-off/turn-on time of the communicating switches.

Two-wire brushless DC motor control system

A power control and commutation network for a brushless DC motor includes a first section proximate the motor and a second section remote from and connected to the first section by a pair of conductors. Included in the first section is a servo control amplifier defining a main motor power supply and, in the second section, a polyphase brushless DC motor, a commutation module, an auxiliary power supply for the module, motor rotor position sensors and a switching network, the motor stator coils being connected through the switching network to the conductors. The amplifier may have an amplitude modulated DC output and the output of a high frequency oscillator in the second section is AC coupled to the conductors and the auxiliary power supply with its input is AC coupled between the conductors. Alternatively, the amplifier is PWM and the auxiliary power supply includes a rectifier with an input connected across the conductors and a voltage regulator controlling the output voltage.

Brushless DC motor control network

A vacuum chuck apparatus includes a vacuum chuck mounted on one end of a hollow shaft whose other end is connected through a rotary seal to a vacuum source. The seal includes a first member having a cap portion cemented to the shaft end and an axially bored frustoconical projection on its end wall and a second member having a frustoconical socket complementing the projection which partially nests in the socket. The second member has a radial pin loosely engaging a longitudinal slot in a stationary bracket to restrict its rotation and permit its axial movement. A spring loaded pressure plate bears on the outer end face of the seal second member.

Vacuum chuck rotary seal

A portable device for storing information as well as printing and dispensing multiple part tickets, such as traffic or parking violations tickets, includes a manually operable arrangement, for selecting and feeding a ticket from a stacked source of ticket stock, thus significantly reducing the energy requirements for operability and permitting portable usage of the device.

Portable ticket issuing device

A blower motor providing vacuum as, for example, for a magnetic tape handler, is programmed to provide a constant vacuum in an environment of changing altitudes. The blower motor is controlled by a pressure transducer which speeds up the motor as the altitude is increased and slows down the motor as the altitude is decreased.

Altitude correcting vacuum system

A high-speed printer includes a standard printing element, such as a daisy wheel, a paper feed mechanism and a ribbon feed mechanism. All of these various devices are controlled by a single linear actuator which comprises an elongated cylindrical magnet, C-shaped in cross-section, through which a ferrous core axially extends. A plurality of separate armatures envelope the core in the air gap between the magnet and core and are adapted to move linearly upon application thereto of a control current. The armatures control, respectively, the movement of the carriage containing the printer element, the rotation of the printer element, the advancement of the paper feed mechanism and the incremental positioning in both directions of the ink ribbon.

Linear actuator driven printer

A door lock security system is disclosed in which each lock in a multiple lock system is modified by the addition of door lock security apparatus which, in electrical form, stores at least an individual key combination (and possibly several different levels of master key combinations) for the lock. Also, the conventional lock cylinder is replaced with a cylinder assembly which senses the magnetic reluctance state (high or low) of predetermined locations on a key substantially resembling a conventional cylinder lock key in size, weight and general shape and capable of mechanically operating the lock. The magnetic reluctance states of the predetermined locations digitally encode the key combination and the thus encoded combination is compared to the electrically stored one, disabling the mechanical operation of the lock unless the two combinations are identical. The electrical combination storage means within the door lock security apparatus may be placed in an adaptive state in which the combination of the next key inserted into the lock is stored as the lock combination and, thereafter, only a key with that combination will operate the lock. There is also provided an emergency key which overrides all other keys and, at any time, can operate any lock in a multiple lock system. This emergency key generates a time varying electrical signal which enables operation of any door lock despite its stored combination.

Door lock security system

A one piece extrusion provides the base for a simple and effective vacuum tank for magnetic tape handlers. The extrusion carries longitudinal slots which accept stamped metal nuts. These nuts are readily positioned by sliding them along the slots. Slots along the edges of the extrusion are used to carry nuts holding hinges for a plastic cover over the tank front. Slots along the back and near the edges of the extrusion carry nuts for mounting the tank on the tape handler main frame. A longitudinal slot along the back of the extrusion and spaced in from one edge carries spring-loaded tubular inserts for attachment to the vacuum sensing tubes. Communication with the vacuum chamber is implemented by means of holes at appropriate places along the body of the extrusion.

Vacuum tank for magnetic tape handlers

The vacuum for controlling tape loop tension in a magnetic tape handler is supplied by a low speed multiple stage vacuum blower and controlled by a low power solenoid and a flapper valve operated between two predetermined positions. In order to provide fast operation of the flapper valve in response to the low power solenoid a fast acting fluid amplifier is utilized between the solenoid and the flapper valve. The elimination of belts, gears and high speed blowers results in an unusually quiet system.
