An NMR apparatus having a magnet coil system for generating a homogeneous magnetic field comprises a superconducting magnet arranged within a vacuum vessel in the cold region of a cryostat, and a shim system containing shim elements arranged outside the vacuum vessel. The superconducting magnet has a first mechanical connection point to the vacuum vessel via a magnet suspension, and the shim system has a second mechanical connection point to the vacuum vessel via a positioning element. On at least one portion of a path along the vacuum vessel from the first connection point to the second connection point and/or on at least one portion of a path along the positioning element from the second connection point to the shim system, a regulating element for regulating thermally caused changes in length is arranged on the relevant path. Magnetic field homogeneity can thus be kept largely stable.

Active reduction of temperature induced shim drift in NMR magnet systems

A flow cell assembly for use in NMR measurements on a liquid NMR sample in an NMR spectrometer has a cylindrical flow cell for receiving the NMR sample, with a first opening at a first end and a second opening at a second end, and a connecting piece arranged at the first opening for connecting a flow line to the flow cell in a fluid-tight manner. An opening diameter dof the first opening is smaller than an inner flow cell diameter d, and a sealing head of the connecting piece is arranged in the first opening, with a sealing head diameter dlarger than d. For NMR measurements, the flow cell assembly is modified in such a way that the flow lines can be easily exchanged, and high-quality NMR flow measurements can be carried out independently of the orientation of the magnetic field in the NMR spectrometer.

A temperature-control system for an NMR magnet system. A permanent magnet arrangement () with a central air gap () generates a homogeneous static magnetic field inside the air gap. A probehead () transmits RF pulses and receives RF signals from a test sample (). An H0 coil changes the amplitude of the static magnetic field. A shim system () in the air gap further homogenizes the magnetic field. A first insulation chamber () surrounds and thermally shields the permanent magnet arrangement and includes an arrangement () controlling a temperature T1 of the first insulation chamber. The shim system, the H0 coil and the NMR probehead are arranged outside the first insulation chamber in the air gap. A heat-conducting body () is arranged between the shim system and the H0 coil on one side and the permanent magnet arrangement on the other, thereby enhancing field stability and suppressing drift.

Temperature-control system for MR apparatuses with a permanent magnet arrangement

An NMR spectrometer () with a magnet system (), which has a bore () through the magnet center () for inserting a measuring sample () in a transport container (), and with a transport device for pneumatic transport of the sample through a transport channel () into and out of the magnet system. The transport device includes a mechanical interface () with a mounted exchange system () which has parking receptacles () temporarily storing the transport containers. In a transport position, the parking receptacle is inserted into the transport channel, to be loaded with a transport container, removed from the transport channel for temporarily storing the transport container, and reinserted into the transport channel for further transport of the transport container. In the transport position, the parking receptacle forms a part of the transport channel, which permits a faster automated change of the measuring samples in short measurement cycle times.

A transport device for transporting an NMR sample to a probe head (), having a shuttle () and a locking apparatus () for the rotor (), which, when attaching the shuttle to the probe head, releases the rotor, and having a detecting apparatus for detecting the rotor in the shuttle. The probe head has a positioning apparatus (), which holds the probe head in a defined measuring position relative to the shuttle. The detecting apparatus includes a sensor line, which transmits a signal dependent on the position of the probe head to the shuttle's end. A first portion () of the sensor line is mounted inside the shuttle and extends from the rotor in a transport state to the end of the shuttle. A second portion () of the sensor line is mounted inside the probe head and, in the measuring position, is directly adjacent to the first portion.

Transport device for an NMR MAS rotor in a probe head ('MAS shuttle')

A probe head () of an NMR-MAS assembly has a stator () with an opening () receiving a rotor () which, in a measuring position, rotates at the magic angle to the Bfield. The stator is pivotable between the measuring position and a loading position of the rotor. A detection device () permits external, contactless identification of whether the opening of the stator is fitted with a rotor. The detection device has a light source (), from which light is introduced into a lower end (&#x2033;) of a light guide (). The stator has a first bore (), in which a first light guide stump () is positioned such that, in the loading position of the stator, it produces an optical connection between a rotor inserted in the stator and an upper end (') of the light guide opposite the lower end.

An adjustment device () for an RF resonant circuit () of an NMR probe () has a plurality of movable elements () which are arranged in succession, such that adjacent movable elements mutually engage, so as to be movable relative to one another in a limited range. The movable elements each have at least one electrical functional part (-) for adjusting the RF resonant circuit. N outwardly oriented electrical contact elements (-) include at least two functional part terminals (), and the electrical contact elements are each connected to a functional part terminal. The adjustment device also includes a first connection assembly () for slidingly contacting at least a portion of the movable elements from outside, to contact the contact elements in dependence on the movement position of the movable elements, as well as a movement device (), configured to move one of the movable elements.

Adjustment device for an RF resonant circuit of an NMR probe head

A temperature-controlled NMR probe has a lower insert portion formed of multiple parts including two disc-shaped sub-elements that are not mechanically rigidly interconnected, lie flat against one another in the mounted state and are perpendicular to the z axis. The first sub-element (), in terms of material and geometric structure, fulfils the function of electrically insulating the RF and HV lines fed through the lower insert portion, has an electrical conductivity sigma&#x3c;10S/m, mechanically and retains components of the NMR probe constructed on the lower insert portion. The second sub-element () retains the first sub-element on a main frame () of the NMR probe, and is made of a ductile plastics material or metal having a mechanical breaking strength &#x3c3;&#x3e;100 N/mmand a melting temperature T&#x3e;250&#xb0; C. This achieves high breaking strength and resistance to thermal stress while simultaneously attaining required RF and HV properties.

NMR probe comprising a multi-part lower insert portion

A fastening system for attaching an NMR probe to an NMR magnet includes a discoid insert and a retention system that is rigidly connected to the magnet and on which the insert can be mounted. A form-fitting, variable-force connection is established between the NMR probe and the retention system using a spring element. The probe attaches to the insert by a plurality of integral, rigid retaining elements that are of an invariable fixed length. The spring element and the retaining elements are designed geometrically such that in a first, opened state the connection between the insert and the retaining elements has a mechanical backlash between 0.5 mm and 5 mm when the spring element is relaxed. In a second, closed state the connection between the insert and the retaining elements has no mechanical backlash when the spring element is under mechanical tension.

An NMR probe head () comprising one or more HF coils () arranged around a vertical axis of symmetry (z), and an HF network () surrounded by an apparatus () for shielding from external HF radiation comprising an electrically conductive shielding tube () arranged along a z-axis and that can be moved around the HF coils and the HF network in a z direction towards a base disc ()A shielding disc () is provided at an axial distance from the base disc, wherein a tensible HF seal () is arranged between the shielding disc and the shielding tube. When the shielding tube is in a mounted state, the HF seal, in a first mounting state, can slide over the shielding disc in an unbraced and force-free manner. When the HF seal is in a second mounting state, the HF seal is mechanically braced between the shielding disc and the shielding tube to ensure an electrically conductive connection.
