A method for transferring and mixing a pharmaceutical mixture utilizing a by-pass cartridge and a syringe. After mixing the dry component and the diluent in the by-pass cartridge, the mixture can be passed to a syringe which includes a syringe plunger having a fluid passageway therein with a hydrophobic membrane covering the passageway. The mixture can be transferred back and forth between the by-pass cartridge and the syringe through a small bore to achieve mixing, particularly in the case of microspheres held in suspension.

Airless mixing with a by-pass syringe

A transfer and mixing device which utilizes a by-pass cartridge and a syringe. A device for mixing a substance comprised of two constituents contained in a cartridge () and having a cartridge holder () thereabout, the device comprising a plunger rod () for pushing a closure member () to permit the transfer of a diluent in a second chamber () through a by-pass channel () to mix with a constituent in a first chamber (), the plunger rod () being driven by means of a rack () and a pinion gear () arrangement to prevent overly rapid movement of the plunger rod ().

A transfer assembly for transfering a fluid to a vial, admixing the same and then returning the fluid to a cartridge, the transfer assembly having a vial gripper located at a first end and a cartridge holder at the second end of an elongated outer housing, a fluid passageway extending between the vial gripper and the cartridge holder with piercing elements being located at respective ends of the fluid passageway. In a preferred embodiment, an adaptor is mounted on the end of the outer housing where the cartridge holder is situated. The adaptor may move from a retracted to an extended position wherein it will surround the needle.
