A method for controlling movement of an elevator car during an emergency stop includes the steps of determining the load of the car; determining the travel direction of the car; and monitoring the speed of the car. When the car is determined to be either lightly loaded and travelling downwards, or heavily loaded and travelling upwards, brake torque is applied only when the speed of the car reaches zero, as slowing of the car can be accomplished solely by virtue of the balancing factor of the car's counterweight.

Selective elevator braking during emergency stop

An apparatus and method for performing a load test in an elevator installation having an elevator car and a counterweight, which are connected to one another by a supporting device, and a drive brake for halting the elevator car during a downwards journey. The apparatus has a connecting element for fastening to the counterweight, an element with spring properties and a tensioning device for installation in the elevator installation. One point of the tensioning means is fixed to a stationary point of the elevator installation via the element with spring properties. Another point of the tensioning means is connected to the counterweight via the connecting element, wherein the tensioning device includes an actuating device with which to tension the element with spring properties in order to thereby exert a downwardly directed tensile stress on the counterweight.

Apparatus for performing a loading test in an elevator system and method for performing such a loading test

A weight compensation system and a method of operating the system for compensating eccentric loading of an elevator car vertically movable in an elevator shaft. The elevator car has spring-mounted rollers engaging guide rails and the system includes sensors detecting a position of the elevator car relative to the guide rails. A control unit is connected to the sensors and a hydraulic compensating system for controlling movement of liquid to compensate for the eccentric loading of the elevator car.
