An audio device has passive radiators that are driven by acoustic drivers. The passive radiators are arranged so that the net mechanical vibration is minimized.

Passive acoustic radiating

A flexure includes a shaped sheet of material having a middle portion coupled to a magnet, an end portion, and a corner portion between the end portion and the middle portion, the corner portion including a curve with a concave curvature relative to a point of view outside the corner portion. The flexure may be used in a linear motor.

Relieving stress in a flexure

An acoustic passive radiator that controls 'rocking mode' vibration. An acoustic passive radiator includes a diaphragm for radiating acoustic energy. The diaphragm has a perimeter portion and a central portion. The perimeter portion is thicker than the central portion. The passive radiator further includes a passive radiator suspension. The suspension includes a skin element encasing the diaphragm. The skin element comprises a surround for physically coupling the passive radiator to an acoustic enclosure, pneumatically sealing the diaphragm and the enclosure. The surround has a non-uniform width. The passive radiator a non-pneumatically sealing, non-surround, non-spider suspension element. The non-surround suspension element and the surround coact to control the motion of the diaphragm and to support the weight of the diaphragm.

An electromagnetic actuator includes a stator assembly mounted to a center pole formed of material having high magnetic permeability and functions as a return path for the magnetic field generated when current is passed through coils in the stator assembly. When current is applied to one or more coils within the stator assembly, a magnetic field is generated that interacts with a magnetic field generated by one or more magnets disposed within the armature assembly and causes the armature to move relative to the center pole thus, for example, opening or closing a valve.

Electromagnetic actuator and control

A shock absorbing system includes a housing having at least one corner angle, a corner cap outside each corner angle, and energy absorbing material filling the region between the corner angle and the corner cap. The energy absorbing material exhibits high stiffness under normal operating conditions and low stiffness during impact. The shock absorbing system is constructed and arranged to permit shearing action and compression during impact.

A flextensional transducer for use in surface ship applications requiring the capability of withstanding underwater explosive shock is described. The transducer includes a plurality of ceramic stacked drivers disposed between an elliptical outer shell having opposing slots disposed along an inner surface of the shell and a flextensional limiting support block. The drivers are mounted on ball joint sockets which allow pivoting during high acceleration loading conditions. The support block further has a pair of curved surfaces which will generally follow, in close proximity, the inner surface of the shell and a member coupled to the opposing slots of the elliptical shell. The block can be fixed to a rigid mount disposed over at least one end of the transducer using a plurality of tie rods.

Electro-acoustic transducers

A transducer for use in surface ship applications includes a prestress element for providing additional compressive force to an electromechanical driver disposed within the transducer. The transducer includes a shell having inner portions, an electromechanical driver having end portions coupled to inner portions of the shell, and a block prestress element disposed between one of the end portions of the driver and the inner portions of the shell. The block prestress element is fabricated from a shape memory alloy which can be deformed within a first temperature range and reverts back to its original shape when exposed to a temperature above the first temperature range. This characteristic provides for the generation of additional stresses which may be desired for providing protection to the electromechanical driver from unwanted tensile forces. This approach for providing additional compressive force to the driver allows the insertion of the stacked ceramic electromechanical driver within the shell with prestress levels generally not achievable without possible damage to the shell.
