This disclosure is directed to fiber optic pulsed polarimeters based on either streak camera or photodiode detection using a backscatter tailored optical fiber and the polarization optical time domain reflectometry technique for conducting remote diagnostic measurements of inducing fields along the fiber. The backscatter tailored optical fiber comprises a single mode fiber with an array of fiber Bragg gratings written to produce a predetermined distribution of backscatter signal in intensity and spectral content in response to a pulse propagating along the array. The fiber optic pulsed polarimeter includes a directional coupler that diverts the backscatter from the backscatter-tailored optical fiber to a polarization detection system for determining the polarization state of the backscatter as the polarized light pulse transits the backscatter-tailored optical fiber.

Fiber optic pulsed polarimetry

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to pulsed polarimeters for conducting remote, non-perturbative diagnostic measurements of inducing fields of a medium demonstrating induced optical activity. In one aspect, a pulse polarimeter includes a light source emitting a polarized light pulse having sufficiently narrow spatial extent at a prescribed wavelength and a light gathering optical system including a light gathering optic having an optic axis directed toward the medium and positioned to collect and collimate a predetermined solid angle of an emission from the medium into a collimated emission beam, while preserving the polarization state of the emission. The pulse polarimeter includes a directional coupler that makes coincident the propagation direction of the polarized light pulse with the optic axis and a polarization detection system for measuring the intensity and determining the polarization state of the collimated emission beam continuously in time as the polarized light pulse transits the medium.

Local non-perturbative remote sensing devices and method for conducting diagnostic measurements of magnetic and electric fields of optically active mediums

An all wheel drive system for a motor vehicle in which wheel slippage is effectively controlled and regenerative energy is effectively stored for subsequent utilization in the system. A hydraulic embodiment of the invention includes a hydraulic motor, a pump, a tank, an accumulator for storing pressurized fluid, and a device for sensing system back pressure. In response to a loss of system back pressure the pressure of the fluid being supplied to the motor is reduced and the motor discharge is directed to the accumulator, and in response to a sensed resumption of system back pressure regenerative energy from the accumulator is directed to the motor to assist in powering the motor. An electric embodiment of the invention includes an electric motor, an electric generator, a device for storing electrical energy such as a battery pack or a capacitor bank, a DC tachometer driven by the motor and operative to sense the motor power requirements, and a directional circuit switch assembly. In response to a drop in the power requirements of the motor representing wheel slippage the energy supplied to the motor is reduced; in response to a sensed overrunning condition of the motor wherein the motor is functioning as a generator the output of the generator is routed to the energy storage device; and in response to a sensed resumption of motor power requirements regenerative energy is directed from the energy storage device to the motor to assist in powering of the motor.

Vehicle all-wheel drive system

An antibacklash beveled gear drive is disclosed. The drive is constructed adjust for intial misalignment and subsequent wear. One of the gears is journaled on a driven shaft and has a biasing means which bump the gears into engagement.

Bevel gear backlash and clutch device

A hydromechanical all wheel drive mechanism providing both hydraulic and mechanical drive to each wheel. A valve in the hydraulic drive senses the relative wheel slippage on one side of the vehicle and compensates for that slippage by directing greater hydraulic power to the side of the vehicle which has greater traction.

Hydromechanical all wheel drive

A vehicle suspension wherein hydraulic fluid is delivered to or from each spension unit via a pilot-operated shuttle valve. Each shuttle valve is controlled by the pressure within the suspension unit, such that suspension force is maintained during jounce and rebound motions. The various shuttle valves may be located in a common manifold housing to reduce the plumbing complexity. The shuttle valves may be selectively bypassed under special circumstances, e.g., to lower the vehicle, or to facilitate vehicle turning maneuvers.

Vehicle suspension

A log splitter attachment for use with a garden tiller. The log splitter attachment is comprised of a frame portion which is releaseably attached to the roto-tiller drive shaft, a log splitting screw which is releaseably attached to the tiller drive shaft to allow for rotatable movement of said splitting screw in unison with the garden tiller drive shaft, and a log support bar attached to the frame portion and extending outwardly for ground engaging support to provide a log rest support during use, and to stabilize the frame portion and the tiller during use.
