A method of cationic electrodeposition, electrocoated articles and novel electrocoating compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise a cationic resin containing blocked isocyanate functionality and are capable of being electrodeposited over rough steel and producing extremely smooth films upon curing.

The present invention encompasses a urethane-modified rosin ester which is derived from an isocyanate and a hydroxyl-functional rosin esterification product of a dimerized rosin. The urethane-modified rosin esters, having a high softening point and good compatibility with hydrocarbon solvents, good gelability and good squalene resistance, are particularly suitable as binders for inks such as fast conversion lithographic inks.

A thickened composition which is cured by free-radical initiated polymerization is composed of a compound containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds per molecule; an active hydrogen-containing homopolymer or copolymer of a diene having a number average molecular weight of from 500 to 15,000; the active hydrogens being derived from hydroxyl, amino, or mercapto groups; and an organic polyisocyanate present in an amount sufficient to thicken said composition without gelation.

Disclosed herein are aqueous compositions comprising a base-neutralized blend of non-gelled phosphated epoxy and a resin which is non-self dispersible with a base, in water. Formaldehyde-containing cationic electrodepositable compositions to which are added a formaldehyde scavenger are disclosed. Also disclosed are the use of these compositions in a method of cationic electrodeposition. Free formaldehyde in cationic compositions can lower the pH of the compositions making them more corrosive to the metal parts such as ferrous metal tanks and attending piping and pumps in contact with such compositions. The presence of the formaldehyde scavenger in such compositions stabilizes the pH.

An air oxidizable coating composition is disclosed comprising an ungelled urethane modified alkyd resin containing pendant polymerizable unsaturated groups attached to the alkyd through urethane linkages. The ungelled urethane modified alkyd is the reaction product of components comprising a hydroxyl containing, air oxidizable alkyd resin having an oil length of between about 20 percent and about 70 percent and an isocyanate-functional ethylenically unsaturated compound. Also disclosed are a process for coating the substrate with the coating composition and certain ungelled urethane modified alkyd resins.

A process for electrodialyzing ultrafiltrate and an electrodialysis cell for use in the process are disclosed. The ultrafiltrate contains ionic materials which form a deposit on at least one of the electrodes of the electrodialysis cell impairing the electrical efficiency of the cell. This problem is overcome by removing the deposited electrode from the cell while simultaneously replacing it with electrode relatively free of deposit, thereby restoring the electrical efficiency of the cell. The invention is particularly useful for treatment of the ultrafiltrate of an electrodeposition bath.

A quaternary ammonium group-containing material and its method of preparation are disclosed. The quaternary ammonium group contains at least one organic group which contains an acyclic group of at least 8 carbon atoms and also contains a group of the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl. The quaternary ammonium group-containing materials are useful as pigment grinding vehicles and in the formulation of pigment paste, particularly pigment paste with high pigment loadings. When formulated in cationic electrodepositable compositions, the pigment grinding vehicles provide for cured electrodeposited coatings of excellent corrosion resistance, particularly over untreated and oily steel.

A high solids, organic solvent based, sprayable coating composition which is capable of acid catalyzed crosslinking is composed of an active hydrogen-containing resin, a curing agent present externally and/or internally as a part of the active hydrogen-containing resin, and a catalytic amount of a non-ionic ester of a sulfonic acid. A polyurethane crosslinker is provided by reacting a partially-blocked diisocyanate and a hydroxyl-terminated, carboxyl group-containing polyurethane precursor. A cationic thermosetting latex, coating compositions prepared therefrom, and the process for providing a protective coating are disclosed. The thermosetting latex comprises a blocked isocyanate curing agent and a cationic acrylic latex which is prepared by copolymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers, at least one of which contains an active hydrogen group, in an acidic medium in the presence of a cationic surfactant, of which the gegen-ion is derived from certain phosphorous-containing acids. Such latices, when formulated into coating compositions, provide corrosion-resistant coatings.

Coating compositions contain pigment dispersants wherein the dispersant is the polymerization product of (i) an alkyl methacrylate having from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, (ii) a hardening monomer selected from the group consisting of a styrene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate and mixtures thereof, (iii) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, crotonic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid and mixtures thereof or a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and which provides carboxyl functionality when reacted with water, alcohol, amine or anhydride, (iv) a monomer having a double bond alpha-beta to a carbonyl group and at least one hydroxyl group or a monomer which provides such groups when further reacted with an acid or an epoxide, and (v) a compound providing an amine or amine salt functional moiety.
