By continuously or intermittently adding amounts of magnetically active moieties, e.g. iron compounds, over time so that the moiety deposits on a catalyst or sorbent in a fluid catalytic cracker or similar circulating hydrocarbon conversion unit, older catalyst, being more magnetic, can be readily separated from catalyst which has been in the system a shorter time. Separation is readily accomplished by passing the catalyst and/or sorbent through a magnetic field and discarding the more magnetic 50% by wt. or more preferably 20% by wt., while recycling the remainder back to the hydrocarbon conversion unit.

A vented cup ballistic separation device and method of use for achieving rapid separation of a suspension of fluidized solid particulate and gasiform material. The vented cup ballistic separation apparatus is useful in a wide variety of vapor-solid contacting devices where rapid separation of solids from vapor is desired e.g. in fluidized catalytic cracking systems. The vented cup ballistic separation apparatus particularly comprises annular chamber about the outer periphery of an open ended riser conduit. The annular chamber is open in the upper end and one or more open end conduits extend outwardly from the annular chamber to provide means for discharging vapors and also for attachment of cyclone separation means if desired. The riser with vented cup or annular chamber preferably terminates within a larger diameter chamber.

An improved ballistic separation device results from surrounding the downstream end of a progressive flow reactor or riser reactor with a concentric conduit that is in fluid communication with a cyclone separator and optionally in fluid communication with dipleg take-offs. The device may also include a bevelled lip or projection at the axial opening of the progressive flow reactor.

Vented riser

A method and apparatus for separating regenerated catalyst from gaseous combustion products within a regenerator. The apparatus comprises a downcomer within the regenerator vessel through which the catalyst and gaseous combustion products flow. Means are provided at the lower end of the downcomer for utilizing the momentum of the catalyst particles to separate them from the gaseous combustion products.

A particular aspect of the invention concepts disclosed and described is directed to the use of a vented cup ballistic separation device and method of use for achieving rapid separation of a suspension of fluidized solid particulate and gasiform material. The vented cup ballistic separation apparatus is particularly discussed in conjunction with separating a suspension of catalyst particles from vaporous hydrocarbon reaction products of catalytic cracking discharged from a riser cracking operation. The vented cup ballistic separation apparatus particularly comprises an annular chamber about the upper periphery of an open ended riser conduit. The annular chamber is open in the upper end and one or more open end conduits extend outwardly from the annular chamber comprising means for attachment to cyclone separation means. The riser with vented cup or annular chamber terminates within a larger diameter chamber.

A process for economically converting carbo-metallic oils to lighter products. The carbo-metallic oils contain 650.degree. F. plus material which is characterized by a carbon residue on pyrolysis of at least about 1 and a Nickel Equivalent of heavy metals content of at least about 4 parts per million. This process comprises flowing the carbo-metallic oil together with particulate cracking catalyst through a progressive flow-type reactor having an elongated reaction chamber, which is at least in part vertical or inclined, for a predetermined vapor riser residence time in the range of about 0.5 to about 10 seconds, at a temperature of about 900.degree. to about 1400.degree. F., and under a pressure of about 10 to about 50 pounds per square inch absolute sufficient for causing a conversion per pass in the range of about 50% to about 90% while producing coke in amounts in the range of about 6 to about 14% by weight based on fresh feed, and laying down coke on the catalyst in amounts in the range of about 0.3 to about 3% by weight. The spent, coke-laden catalyst is separated from the stream of hydrocarbons formed by vaporized feed and resultant cracking products and regenerated in one or more regeneration beds in one or more regeneration zones by burning the coke on the spent catalyst with oxygen. The regenerated catalyst is recycled to the reactor and contacted with fresh carbo-metallic oil. A portion of the catalyst is withdrawn from the cycle, passed through a magnetic field to separate the mass of catalyst into high activity catalyst and low activity catalyst, returning the high activity catalyst to the cycle and disposing of the low activity catalyst.
