A method and coating are provided for temporarily protecting a substrate or article during shipping, handling or storage by applying a removable protective coating over at least a portion of the substrate. The substrate may be flat or curved and may have zero, one or more functional coatings. A plurality of substrates with the protective coating of the invention may be arranged in a shipping container so that the protective coating reduces the possibility of damage to the substrate or optional functional coating. In one embodiment, the protective coating is the evaporation or reaction product of an aqueous coating composition containing a polyvinyl alcohol polymer which may be subsequently removed by aqueous washing, thermal decomposition or combustion. In another embodiment, the protective coating is formed by sputtering a substantially carbon coating onto the substrate. The carbon coating is subsequently removed by combustion. The protective coating may have identification materials, such as colorants or fragrance materials, such that different types of substrates and/or functional coatings can be distinguished from each other. Additionally, the temporary protective coating can improve the heating of a functionally coated glass substrate.

Light-transmitting and/or coated article with removable protective coating and methods of making the same

Improved multi-layer composites are provided. The multi-layer composites include at least a first polymeric layer and a second polymeric layer formed over the first polymeric layer thereby forming an interface region there between. At least one of the polymeric layers is formed from a thermosetting composition which contains an adhesion promoter composition. The adhesion promoter composition is formed from (1) at least one adhesion promoting component, and (2) at least one surface active component. The improvement is represented by the presence of the adhesion promoting component (1) at the interface region.

Cationic electrocoating compositions comprising a cationic electrodepositable resin and particular hydroxyl-free, alkylated polyethers dispersed in an aqueous medium are disclosed. Due to the presence of the polyethers, the compositions electrodeposit at high film builds with good smoothness. However, the polyethers do not result in detrimental effects with regard to the properties of the compositions such as rupture voltage and corrosion resistance of the resultant electrodeposited film. Also, the particular polyethers readily incorporate in the electrodeposition bath, are non-volatile and do not significantly build up in the electrodeposition bath during the electrodeposition process.

Cationic electrocoating compositions

A method of cationic electrodeposition, electrocoated articles and novel electrocoating compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise a cationic resin containing blocked isocyanate functionality and are capable of being electrodeposited over rough steel and producing extremely smooth films upon curing.

Cationic coating compositions for electrodeposition over rough steel

Ungelled reaction products of polyoxyalkylenepolyamies with monoepoxides and optionally with a polyfunctional material which contains groups capable of reacting with amino and/or hydroxyl groups are disclosed. The reaction products can be neutralized with acid and dispersed in aqueous medium where they are useful as additives for cationic electrodeposition baths to improve surface appearance of electrodeposited coatings.

Polyoxyalkylenepolyamine reaction products and their use in cationic

Formaldehyde-containing cationic electrodepositable compositions to which are added a formaldehyde scavenger are disclosed. Also disclosed are the use of these compositions in a method of cationic electrodeposition. Free formaldehyde in cationic compositions can lower the pH of the compositions making them more corrosive to the metal parts such as ferrous metal tanks and attending piping and pumps in contact with such compositions. The presence of the formaldehyde scavenger in such compositions stabilizes the pH.

Cationic electrodepositable compositions containing formaldehyde

A quaternary ammonium group-containing material and its method of preparation are disclosed. The quaternary ammonium group contains at least one organic group which contains an acyclic group of at least 8 carbon atoms and also contains a group of the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl. The quaternary ammonium group-containing materials are useful as pigment grinding vehicles and in the formulation of pigment paste, particularly pigment paste with high pigment loadings. When formulated in cationic electrodepositable compositions, the pigment grinding vehicles provide for cured electrodeposited coatings of excellent corrosion resistance, particularly over untreated and oily steel.

An implosion-protected evacuated glass enclosure such as a cathode ray tube or an electric lamp is disclosed. The enclosure is made implosion resistant by depositing on the exterior surface thereof a polyurethane film. The mechanical properties of the polyurethane film result in outstanding glass retention properties when the evacuated glass enclosure implodes.

Implosion coatings

Novel thermosetting resinous compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise the reaction product of a polymeric polyol having a cured glass transition temperature less than 20.degree. C. with a substantial stoichiometric excess of an aminoplast curative. The cured compositions are hard with good durability and surprising flexibility for such high aminoplast loadings. These compositions are particularly useful as coatings for resilient and rubbery substrates such as foam rubber, polyurethane foam and vinyl foam and on soft metal surfaces such as mild steel and aluminum.

Novel thermosetting resinous compositions

A water-diluted, ungelled, non-sedimenting polyurethane and a process for preparing such a polyurethane in an aqueous medium is disclosed. High molecular weight thermoplastic products are obtained by chain extending in aqueous medium an NCO polymer having a salt group equivalent weight of 6000 or less and substantially free of reactive hydrogen. The average functionality and equivalent ratio of the polyisocyanate and active hydrogen-containing materials used in making the NCO polymer, as well as the functionality of the chain extender, are carefully controlled so as to get high molecular weight ungelled products. Thermosetting compositions can be made by adding curing agent to the chain extended material. Curing agents can also be incorporated into the polymer molecule either in the making of the partially reacted NCO-containing prepolymer or by further reaction with the partially reacted NCO-containing prepolymer. The water-dispersed polyurethanes of the present invention are excellent film formers, capable of making coatings with a wide spectrum of desirable properties. In addition, they can be added to other water-compatible compositions to improve flexibility, hardness, drying and other coating properties.
