A predistorter for an electro-optical converter includes a plurality of low noise RF amplifiers distributed along a transmission line that receive an RF input. Second order intermodulation injection (IM2) circuitry includes an inductively-degenerated frequency doubler to square and filter IM2 products of the RF input. A Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM) is used for electro-optical conversion. Feed forward circuitry injects IM2 to independently propagate RF intermodulation components with velocity matching to the MZM. At least one driver injects the RF input and RF intermodulation components into the MZM.

Analog predistortion linearization for optical fiber communication links

A fiber-optic gyroscope is disclosed, wherein the fiber-optic gyroscope has counter-propagating light signals in a closed-loop optical path, and where the light signals are characterized by an orthogonality that mitigates optical coupling between them. In some embodiments, the orthogonality is a difference in frequency of the two signals. In some embodiments, the orthogonality is a difference in the polarizations of the two signals. The orthogonality is imparted on the light signals by a non-reciprocal element that is optically coupled with the optical path. In some embodiments, a gain-balancing filter is also included to ensure that the loop gain for each light signal is substantially equal to one. In some embodiments, the light signals are provided by a gain element that is characterized by inhomogeneous broadening.

Orthogonal-mode laser gyroscope

An optical device and method providing multi-channel bulk optical power monitoring is disclosed. The device and method may include a scanning mirror, a plurality of input optical fibers, a plurality of output optical fibers, and at least one sample optical fiber optically connected to a photodetector. The device and method may further include a first reflective surface and a second reflective surface. The first reflective surface may reflect light from the input optical fibers to the second reflective surface. The second reflective surface may reflect a first portion of the light into the output optical fibers and pass a second portion of the light to the scanning mirror. The scanning mirror may reflect samples of the second portion of the light into the at least one sample optical fiber.

Multichannel optical power meter using free space beam sampling

A system is provided to obtain loss optimized output optical power by way of feedback control and stabilization in an optical signal switching or routing system. The optical signal switching or routing system includes at least two input optical fibers and at least two output optical fibers, a controllable mechanism for directing an optical beam from one of the input optical fibers to one of the output optical fibers, and a mechanism for measuring the optical power applied to output optical fiber. The measuring mechanism provides a measure of the output optical power through a signal processing apparatus to a control apparatus. Possible other inputs to the signal processing apparatus include the input optical power, test optical power, etc. The inputs to the signal processing apparatus are compared and the signal processing apparatus outputs a signal to the control apparatus to provide optimized output power.

Feedback stabilization of a loss optimized switch

An optical switch having switch mirror arrays controlled by scanning beams that reduce the amount of electrical connections required and reduce the complexity for constructing large optical switches. Movement of the switch mirror arrays is controlled by one or more scanning beams. The optical switch includes one or more arrays of optical switch inputs and outputs and one or more arrays of movable mirrors to direct light beams from the optical switch inputs to the optical switch outputs. The optical switch also includes one or more control elements to control the movable mirrors based on scanning beams directed to the one or more control elements.

The mode-locked laser with improved pulse power output can be realized by combining an optical oscillator with a flared CW or modulated gain amplifier. An optical filter or isolator may be disposed between the oscillator and amplifier to avoid feedback of spontaneous noise. A two-segment laser is devised by providing a flared gain section between a modulated gain section and an absorber section within the integrated semiconductor laser. The flared section may taper from a larger modulated gain section to a smaller cross section absorber section or vice versa. Various combinations of absorber sections coupled to modulated gain sections by CW gain or passive flared gain sections may be combined with various arrangements of reflectors and tapered CW gain amplifiers are cascades of such amplifiers and modulated gain pairs. A saturable absorber may be used in a two-segment laser in which the absorber is bleachable and has a characteristic temperature which is increased during short time periods so that a passive gain is realized by the return pulse traveling through the saturable absorber provided that the returning pulse is timed to coincide with the temporal gain realized in the absorber.
