A tool holding device for holding a tool bit to a drive spindle includes a body member having an axially extending bore defined therein for receipt of a tool shank. The body member includes a plurality of axially extending segments defining the bore. The segments are defined by axially extending slits in the body member. The slits extend from a front face of the body member rearward. The segments are radially compressible to grip upon a tool shank inserted into the bore when a radially compressive force is applied to the segments in the area of the slits. The bore defined by the segments has a tapered diameter that is greater at the front face of the body member and tapers to a lesser diameter in the axially rearward direction.

Enhanced grip tool holding chuck

A clamping mechanism is configured for receipt on a threaded drive spindle to hold a working tool relative to the drive spindle. The mechanism includes a flange surface disposed to abut against a working tool in an operational mode of the device, and a rotatable member configured with the flange surface and disposed to advance the flange surface upon manual rotation thereof. The rotatable member includes at least one manual tightening device or mechanism for effectively increasing the manual tightening torque.

Hand actuable clamping device with circumferentially extending

A collet chuck device has a body member with a frustoconical recess defined therein. A collet is disposed within the recess. A nut member is rotationally configured on the body member to move the collet axially within the recess. The nut member has an outer sleeve member and an inner sleeve member concentric within the outer sleeve member. The inner sleeve member is threadedly engaged on threads defined on the body member and contains ball grooves defined on an outer circumferential surface thereof. The outer sleeve member has ball grooves defined on the inner circumferential surface thereof and rolling bodies are operably disposed in the ball grooves so that the outer sleeve member is rotatable relative to the inner sleeve member. Upon rotation of the nut member on the body member in the tightening direction, the outer sleeve member advances axially in the tightening direction relative to the inner sleeve member through engagement of the rolling bodies in the ball grooves and thereby forces the collet further into the frustoconical recess.

Collet chuck device

This invention has as its purpose the provision of a clamp screw in which the loss of clamping force is greatly reduced, a powerful clamping force can be obtained with a small rotational input, a sufficient clamping force can be obtained by a manual operation, and moreover, a sufficient clamping force can be obtained without excessive clamping by making effective use of the reverse thrust of the rotating tool. With the clamp screw of the invention, when the flange ring is in contact with the object to be attached, the rotation of the threaded member stops and a clamping state is entered, the rotation of the operating ring is screw fed by the balls moving around the thread grooves, and as a result of this movement of the operating ring due to the screw feed, pressure is exerted on the flange ring through the restraining ring thus clamping the tool to be attached.

Ball screw clamping device

The chuck includes a body with an axial recess and a transverse opening intersecting the recess. First and second cam members are disposed at least partially within the transverse opening and have first and second passages, respectively, which squeeze a cylindrical, slitted inner sleeve that holds the tool shank during rotation of the chuck. The inner sleeve is spring-biased for axial movement relative to the body and has a tapered upper end that is compressed when engaging a tapered retainer sleeve and thereby retains the tool shank during nonrotation of the chuck. An outer sleeve including comolded inner and outer shells, is configured and disposed to move axially about the body. A remote actuating member effects axial movement of the outer sleeve and inner sleeves to permit insertion or withdrawal of the tool shank from the chuck. An engagement mechanism connects the chuck to a drive spindle and also has a mounting mechanism for facilitating automated mounting of the chuck to a drive spindle.

Counter centrifugal chuck and mounting systems

The chuck includes a slitted body with an axial bore that holds the tool shank during rotation of the chuck. A gripping sleeve applies compressive pressure via cam elements to reduce the diameter of the axial bore. A spring biased locking sleeve can activate locking elements to lock the gripping sleeve to the body member in the locked position. An engagement mechanism connects the chuck to a drive spindle and also has a mounting mechanism for facilitating automated mounting of the chuck to a drive spindle.

Tool-less machine tool chuck

A quick-change chuck device has a body member having a recess defined therein for receipt of a circular tool shank. The body member includes a number of tapered slots defined therein in communication with the recess. An outer sleeve member is coaxial about the body member and axially movable relative to the body member. An axial spring mechanism is disposed between the sleeve member and the body member so as to bias the sleeve member longitudinally relative to the body member to a biased position. The sleeve member is axially movable against the biasing force of the spring mechanism to a released position. Tapered pins are seated within each tapered slot. The tapered pins contact a pin engaging surface defined on the inner diameter of the outer sleeve and are forced radially inward within the slots so as to extend into the recess in the biased position of the outer sleeve. The pins are movable radially outward within the slots once the outer sleeve is moved to its released position relative to the body member. The outer sleeve can include a polymer sleeve surrounding a cylindrical insert in which an axially extending slit is disposed through the insert and between adjacent pin engaging surfaces.

Quick release chuck device

The machine tool collet has a plurality of gripping jaws held in a longitudinally and angularly spaced relation about a longitudinal centerline axis through the collet. The gripping jaws have an inner face parallel to the centerline axis and the plurality of jaws define an inner diameter opening through the collet for receiving a tool shank. Resilient material is disposed between the gripping jaws for holding the plurality of jaws in the desired spaced relation. The radially inward directed stop is defined within the opening of the collet. The stop is disposed so as to contact the rear face of a tool shank inserted into the collet thereby preventing rearward axial movement of the tool shank within the collet.

Machine tool collet with axial stop

A tapping collet is actuated by engagement with a mating surface of a collet holder for holding a tap having a round shank portion and a square shank portion. The collet has a plurality of independent gripping jaws circumferentially disposed at essentially 90 degree intervals about a centerline axis through the collet. The gripping jaws have an inner face parallel to the centerline axis and an outer face which defines an outer surface for engaging a collet holder mating surface. Resilient material is disposed between the gripping jaws for holding the jaws in the desired spaced relation. The gripping jaws comprise a step portion which extends radially inward and defines a second inner diameter opening to engage the flat sides of the square shank portion of a tap inserted into the collet. The continuous outer diameter seal is disposed circumferentially about the outer surface of the collet and a continuous inner diameter seal is disposed circumferentially within a first inner diameter opening of the collet.

Tapping collet

A quick release chuck device includes a body member having an internal bore for receipt of a tool shank. The body member is matable to a drive spindle. A plurality of circumferentially spaced passages are defined in the body member, with each passage defining an opening into the internal bore. Bearing members are disposed in the passages and are radially movable within the passages so that at least a portion of each bearing member extends into the internal bore. An outer sleeve is disposed about the body member and the bearing members. The sleeve is rotatable relative to the body member between a gripping position and a released position. The outer sleeve has an inner diameter surface with ramping engaging surfaces defined therein which are spaced so as to engage the bearing members and force the bearing members radially inward to positively grip a tool shank disposed in the internal bore when the outer sleeve is rotated to its gripping position. The tool shank is released by rotating the outer sleeve to its released position which allows the bearing members to move radially outward.

An integrated and collet and chuck device includes a body member configured to be non-movably fixed to a drive spindle of a driving tool. An outer sleeve member is disposed about a portion of the body member and is rotatable relative to the body member. The sleeve member comprises a front end defining a collet receiving chamber for carrying a conventional collet. A nut is configured with the sleeve member so as to be rotatable therewith relative to the body member. A screw member is disposed rotatably concentric within the nut. The screw and nut are threadedly engaged so that rotation of the nut drives the screw member in the longitudinal direction. The screw member has a collet engaging surface which presses the collet within the frusto-conical inner diameter surface of the sleeve thereby causing the collet to collapse and grip upon the shank of a tool carried therein.

Integrated collet and chuck device

The present invention relates to a method and process for manufacturing an improved machine tool collet. The invention further relates to an improved machine tool collet having design parameters optimized to maximize the gripping strength of the collet. The collet according to the invention is of the type having a plurality of gripping jaws spaced around a common longitudinal axis with resilient material between the gripping jaws. The method includes calculating the total torque generated on a bar passing through the collet for a given collet configuration having predetermined design parameters. The total torque includes the torque generated just prior to a toggle condition occurring between the gripping jaws and the bar and the maximum moment force generated between the gripping jaws and the bar at a toggle condition. At least one of the design parameters of the collet, such as jaw thickness or number of jaws, is varied and the total torque generated is recalculated until the total torque reaches a maximum value for the given collet configuration. In this manner, at least one design parameter can be varied and optimized for maximizing the gripping strength of the collet.

Method of manufacturing a collet with optimized gripping action

A sealing collet is provided having a plurality of independent gripping jaws longitudinally disposed about a common centerline axis. The gripping jaws have exposed inner and outer faces. A resilient material is disposed between the gripping jaws and holds the jaws in a predetermined longitudinally and angularly spaced relation about the centerline axis of a collet. A continuous outer diameter seal is disposed circumferentially about the conical outer surface of the collet. The outer diameter seal is formed integral with the resilient material. A continuous inner diameter seal is also provided disposed circumferentially within the inner diameter of the collet and also formed integral with the resilient material. At least one coolant fluid channel may be defined in the resilient material in fluid communication with a coolant port defined through the face of the collet for introducing cooling fluid onto the working surfaces of a tool held by the collet.

A sealing collet is provided having a plurality of independent gripping jaws longitudinally disposed about a common centerline axis. The gripping jaws have exposed inner and outer faces. A resilient material is disposed between the gripping jaws and holds the jaws in a predetermined longitudinally and angularly spaced relation about the centerline axis of a collet. A continuous outer diameter seal is disposed circumferentially about the conical outer surface of the collet. The outer diameter seal is formed integral with the resilient material. A continuous inner diameter seal is also provided disposed circumferentially within the inner diameter of the collet and also formed integral with the resilient material.
