In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention, a tear resistant silicone elastomer, which has improved elongation properties, is produced. This elastomer is the radiation induced reaction product of a noncured methyl vinyl silicone resin (VMQ) and uniformly dispersed therein a blend of a polyfunctional acrylic crosslinking monomer and a filler.

Radiation cured and monomer modified silicon elastomers

In an exemplary embodiment a high temperature and oil resistant elastomer composition includes the peroxide-induced reaction product of, by weight, 100 parts ethylene-propylene-diene rubber, about 20 parts of a suitable crosslinking monomer, about 8 parts of a chlorinated organic material such as Chlorowax LV, about 10 parts of a suitable hindered phenolic antioxidant 10 to 15 parts zinc oxide and 5 to 8 parts magnesium oxide. The elastomer formulation may optionally contain suitable reinforcing and/or semireinforcing fillers and processing oils. A similar ethylene-propylene rubber formulation may be prepared. The resulting elastomer formulations have remarkable oil resistance and retain a significant elongation even after aging at 177.degree. C. (350.degree. F.) for 168 hours.

Ethylene-propylene elastomers and ethylene-propylene-diene elastomers

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention, a high temperature oil resistant ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (hereinafter EPDM) elastomer is produced. This product is basically the high energy radiation induced reaction product of, by weight, about 100 parts of an uncured conventional EPDM elastomer, from 15 to 25 parts of trimethylolpropanetrimethacrylate (hereinafter TMPT), from 15 to 80 parts of a reinforcing filler and from 0 to 40 parts of an extender oil.

Oil-resistant EPDM elastomer

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention, the ultimate elongation of an electron beam radiation cured acrylonitrile-butadiene elastomer is significantly increased by the incorporation of a preferred noncrosslinking monomer, glycidyl methacrylate, in combination with the conventional crosslinking monomer, trimethylolpropanetrimethacrylate, prior to the radiation curing process.
