A magnetizable ink contains at least 65% of magnetizable particles having a modal diameter between 3 &#x3bc;m and 10 &#x3bc;m. The particles may have a size distribution with 0% above 18 micron and not greater than 20% under 0.5 micron. The particles may have a surface area less than 50,000 cmper cm, and/or the ink may have a viscosity less than 16,000 cps when ready to print. Where the particles are rounded, magnetically soft iron particles, the surface area may be less than 12,000 cmper cmand the viscosity may be less than 1,500 cps.

Magnetic load supporting inks

The invention encompasses a fabric book with high resolution sublimation printed images and a method of making such a fabric book. The fabric book of the invention has a plurality of fabric pages. The fabric pages are made of a synthetic material with an original softness corresponding to the synthetic material. At least one fabric page has a high resolution sublimation printed image imprinted using the method of the invention. The fabric page with the high resolution image substantially retains the original softness, even after printing. The preferred method of creating the high resolution images in the fabric books begins with selecting an appropriate original object. A digital rendition of the original object is created. The digital rendition is edited to create an edited image with optimum print resolution. A color separation is performed on the edited image to create a color separated image. Optimal sublimation inks are prepared and suitable sublimation paper is selected. Using the optimal sublimation inks, the color separated image is printed onto film or directly onto a plate. The image is then offset printed onto the suitable sublimation paper. The image is sublimated from the sublimation paper to a fabric sheet creating a fabric sheet with a high resolution image. To create the high resolution on the fabric sheet, the imprinted portion of the fabric sheet may be polyester, nylon, and polyester/cotton blend fabrics (no more than 5% cotton), and the like, but not cotton or other naturally occurring fabrics. The fabric sheet with the high resolution image may then be combined with other fabric sheets (with or without high resolution images) to form a fabric book.

Soft fabric book with high resolution images and method of making same

A substrate is printed with areas of magnetizable ink. The magnetizable ink is compressed into the surface of the substrate, and overprinted to hide it. Suitable inks for the purpose are disclosed. The ink may be permanently magnetized in any of a variety of patterns.

Magnetically interactive substrates

A magnetically interactive substrate is provided for a book. The book includes a plurality of interactive substrates in the form of a sheet or a panel of material. Each of the interactive substrates includes magnetizable areas or portions printed thereon. The magnetizable areas are printed using a magnetic ink formulated by magnetizable particles added to an ink formulated for a preselected printing process. The magnetizable particles are shaped and sized to be compatible with the preselected printing process. A plurality of removable play pieces are adapted to be attracted to the magnetizable areas on the substrate. Each of the removable play pieces includes a substrate or support member on which magnetic material is applied. The magnetic material allows the play piece to be selectively positioned on the magnetizable areas. In the preferred embodiment, the magnetizable areas are magnetized to have a specific direction of polarization so that the removable play pieces can be positioned on the magnetizable areas in only one manner.

Magnetically interactive substrate for a book

A three-dimensional surface treatment which can be applied to or supported by a substrate is provided for covering a book. The surface treatment comprises at least one three-dimensional member made from plastic having an outer surface, an inner surface and a border. The outer surface is sculpturally molded into a three-dimensional sculpture-in-the-round, having peaks, impressions, relieved areas and undercuts in all axes to increase the overall dimensionality and detail of the surface treatment. In the preferred embodiment, multiple three-dimensional members may be used, wherein each three-dimensional member serves as a separate layer that forms part of the overall three-dimensional appearance of the surface treatment. In addition, interactive devices may be embedded in the three-dimensional members in order to make the surface treatment interactive.
