The force clamping the sheets (T1, T4) of the stator magnetic circuit is transmitted to clamping fingers (1) by radial levers (2) bearing on the shell (10) and subject, further from the stator axis, to a longitudinal thrust transmitted by bars (4) bearing on the shell beyond the heads (16) of the stator winding bars.

The current lead operates at a cryogenic temperature. The collector ring operates at room temperature. While the rotor is being cooled down there is considerable relative movement between them due to thermal contraction. Electrical connection is ensured by interconnecting 'rear' or cold side rods with 'front' or warm side rodes. The device of the present invention comprises an insulating connector box (12) mounted on the shaft of the rotor. Inside the connector box there are inner and outer pairs of contact blocks (24,23) which clamp onto both a single rear rod (14) and a pair of front rods (16,18). The clamping force is provided by flyweights (28a,b,c). The rotor may thus be cooled to cryogenic temperatures while stationary or rotating slowly since the rods are loosely clamped if at all, and can slide relative to each other. Once working temperatures are reached the rotor is accelerated and the rods are tightly clamped to provide good electrical contact.

The invention relates to a gas-cooled rotor for an electric machine. At each axially separated rotor slot, cooling ducts are supplied with cold gas by the duct of a lower cavity and form a parallel network in the upper levels (B) of the slot cavity (1). Said network includes a radial inlet duct (6), a plurality of transverse ducts (8) constituted by grooves in the conductor strips and a radial outlet duct (7) so as to increase the heat exchange surface at these upper levels and to avoid excessive heating thereof despite the heating of the gas in the lower levels (A). Application to turbo alternator rotors.

A current lead for a superconducting rotary machine is constituted by a copper tube having a superconducting conductor fastened (e.g. by soldering) to a portion of its length, the entire length of the tube having copper cooling plates each of which blocks the bore of the tube leaving only a small hole for the passage of gaseous or hypercritical helium. The circulation of a low temperature cooling fluid is insured by thermal hon effect in a cryoalternator from within a closed loop circuit containing an inner rotating seal of the 'bayonet' type with a very small radial gap. Longitudinal and radial piping within the rotor permits internal circulation of cooling fluid by thermal siphon effect across the 'bayonet' type rotating inner seal in the absence of positive circulation by leakage of the coolant across the inner seal radial gap.

The invention applies more particularly to electric generators with an inductor cooled by liquid helium.
