An inkjet printer adjusts operation of a vacuum system coupled to a printhead to compensate for pressure changes in the manifold of the printhead caused by vertical displacement of the printhead within the printer. The inkjet printer includes a controller that determines either a difference between an optimal pressure in the manifold and a current pressure to operate a vacuum coupled to the manifold for pressure adjustment or it correlates a current printhead vertical position to a previously observed vertical position and uses a vacuum value associated with the previously observed vertical position to operate the vacuum.

A lamp array for drying liquid ink on a media in a printing apparatus. The printing apparatus includes a transport system arranged to move the media through the printing apparatus in a process direction. The lamp array includes a plurality of lamps, each lamp of the plurality of lamps having a longitudinal axis arranged in a direction parallel to the process direction and adjacent to the transport system, wherein the plurality of lamps are equidistantly positioned substantially across a cross process width of the transport system.

A cooling system comprising of a coolant manifold, a heat sink configured to fit in the coolant manifold, a plurality of cooling fins formed in the heat sink, and a coolant configured to flow through the coolant manifold to the heat sink. Diamond shaped pin fins associated with the heat sink create a series of divergent fluid paths for the cooling fluid that helps to create turbulence and improved heat transfer.

An apparatus and a method for cooling a digital micromirror device are disclosed. For example, the apparatus includes a digital micromirror device (DMD), a socket coupled to the DMD and a spray cooling block coupled to the socket to form an enclosed volume with a surface of the DMD. The spray cooling block includes a first plurality of openings to spray liquid droplets onto the surface of the DMD and a second plurality of openings to collect effluent into an effluent collection volume.

Cooling a digital micromirror device

A DMD cooling apparatus and method includes a DMD chip configured on a substrate, and a heatsink located within and integrated into the substrate upon which the DMD is configured. A plurality of micro-channels can be formed on a backside of the substrate. The micro-channels are fabricated via microlithography in association with a fabrication of the DMD chip such that the heatsink integrated into the silicon substrate allows for direct heat removal from the substrate.

An inkjet printer for printing on a continuous web of recording media includes a receiver to receive a beam of collimated light transmitted across the surface of a continuous web of recording media supported by a roller. The intensity of the transmitted beam received by the receiver can be used to determine the presence of a defect in the continuous web or in the roller. A controller is configured to reduce the speed of or stop movement of the web through the printer and to retract one or more printheads from a printing location to prevent the defect from damaging the printhead(s).

A transport with media hold down is used with an inkjet printer. A plurality of spar links and vacuum links are connected pivotally together to form an endless belt orbiting around drive wheels and driven wheels. Vacuum links have hollow chambers to hold the media sheet against the endless belt using vacuum. At least one spar is received in a slot on a spar link. The spar extends above the link to receive the media sheet. The spar moves into a clamping position by a cam and follower to clamp the media sheet against the spar link. The media sheet will thus pass beneath the inkjet print head without contact. The spar moves into an extended position by the cam and follower to release the media sheet. The spar moves into a retracted position below the spar link surface by the cam and follower to allow the media sheet to exit the transport.

A mobile cart for a three-dimensional object printing system includes a mechanism that enables vertical movement of the platen with reference to ejector heads in the system. The mobile cart includes a pair of links at each end of a cart that pivotally connect a member positioned between the cart and the platen to the cart and the platen. An actuator is configured to laterally move the member bi-directionally and along an axis that is orthogonal to the member. This movement of the member pivots the links to raise and lower the platen depending on the direction in which the member is urged by the actuator.

A printed sheet drying apparatus includes, among other components, a nozzle connected to a heated air supply, and an exhaust chamber connected to the nozzle and to a blower. The nozzle comprises a heated air outlet portion. The heated air outlet portion comprises a multi-planar surface having parallel slot openings tapering away from the printed sheet to prevent saturation at the boundary layer. The exhaust chamber has an exhaust opening that matches the shape of the multi-planar surface, and the exhaust opening is larger than the nozzle and is positioned to form an exhaust periphery gap surrounding a periphery of the nozzle.
